A visual guide to spring flowers in East Asia. Clockwise from top right, in Japanese. I added English + Korean and Chinese Mandarin readings below 梅 plum (ume/maehwa/mei) 杏 apricot (anzu/salgu/xing) 李 plum (sumomo/jadu/li) 桃 peach (momo/boksung-a/tao) 櫻 cherry (sakura/beotkkeot/ying) 🎨 mojacookie

Everyone in Japanese is familiar with different readings for the same characters "depending on the context." But what context makes clear how to read this place name 和坂, read Kanigasaka if it is the left ward, but Wasaka if it is the adjacent (!) right ward....

BREAKING The SEC has just halted its fraud prosecution of Justin Sun, a Chinese national who has put more than $50 million in Trump's pocket since November through the purchase of crypto tokens from a Trump-backed company, World Liberty Financial.

A new translation of Li Qingzhao just arrived. Her poem about surviving after the loss of the nation grabbed my attention.

I love photos of the examination spaces. It's so hard to conceptualize how massive these events were. And just think how many of these candidates were staying in abandoned temples being haunted by gorgeous ghost women.

In this world of shrinking research budgets, academic layoffs and failing universities, Elsevier is still making an obscene profit. If anything has radicalised me to green it's these numbers. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-worl...

Amiri Baraka

Labyrinth-like Heart Sutra drawn in the shape of a pagoda. The unicursal text flows around the entire image staring and finishing at the doorway where Guanyin sits. A handful of these dated to the 9th century were found inside the hidden library cave of Dunhuang in 1908. #manuscriptmonday 🗃️ 🀄️📚

On February 12, 1906, excavators on the island of Elephantine (pleiades.stoa.org/places/786021) discover a jar with papyri dated to ca. 300-250 BCE, including a drinking song to open a symposium (ὑπόμνημα) with & remind drinkers to behave. berlpap.smb.museum/00644/?lang=en χαίρετε, συμπόται ἄνδρες!

We are looking for people to join our AAR roundtable on teaching Buddhism in a climate when the humanities are under threat. We especially seek participants from financially vulnerable institutions and/or those in states in which higher education is under legislative attack. If interested, DM me.

Fantastic story of a lost manuscript that was just published, 80 years later. Robert van Gulik, on Donggao 東皐 (1639 - 1695), a Chinese Chan Master in Japan

“I love the vibe!” the woman exclaimed, then turned to Q with a suspicious squint: “Are you a Trump supporter?” Had their lack of MAGA bling given them away? Or were they so obviously liberal nerds? www.chinafile.com/re...

Warrior rabbits were a thing both in China and in Europe! 🐇🐇

This is a good action.

One of the most sampled beats of all time. A classic groove. Now you know the lyrics too.

Shao-yun Yang's critique of historians' habit of applying the label "cosmopolitan" to the first half of the Tang dynasty. Excellent reminder to all of us that you can't ignore the rest of the world even if you're only telling the history of one region or linguistic sphere. doi.org/10.1017/S002...

“Writing these letters had been a collective experience for generations of Chinese students, creating messages to imaginary foreign friends they never expected to meet.” Gaokao nostalgia, memes and transnational social media connections.

Xiaohongshu has seen waves of foreign "TikTok refugees," giving rise to endless jokes. Behind the hype lie some deeper themes: geopolitical tensions, a desire for cultural exchange & the unexpected role of 'Li Hua' in bridging the divide. Explainer, read ➡️ whatsonweibo.com/dear-li-hua/

I adore Pema Tseden’s films. I have found them wonderful to watch, and wonderful to teach.

1/5. I just finished re-reading King's "The Role of the Behavioral Scientist in the Civil Rights Movement"--a speech he gave at the American Psychological Association in 1967. I revisit this speech every few years; much of it remains relevant. A few notable sections... www.apa.org/topics/equit...

When writing that journal article, don't forget to add some Figs. 🤣

There are trees where there used to be old-growth forests.

The First Buddhist Temple Constructed on Mainland US: Two Japanese Buddhist temples were dedicated in San Francisco and Sacramento by 1900, but these were old converted residences. The Fresno temple was the first constructed to primarily function as a Buddhist temple. /🧵 🗃️ 📜 #AmericanBuddhism
