We are witnessing a historic and frequently illegal dismantling of the government by the richest man in the world. Lets check in on the Congressional committee whose job it is to monitor what is happening in the executive branch:

I know it is still a way out from MPSA, but I wanted to make sure as many people see this as possible. On Friday, April 4, at 11:40 a.m., there will be an In Memoriam panel for Scott McClurg. A lot of folks knew and loved Scott and this is an opportunity for us to celebrate his life and career.

Local consequences for all the DC firings. A recent UW-Madison PhD dedicating his work to keep kids from smoking is out of a job at the FDA. There are literally thousands of these stories. Dedicated expert loses job; public health to suffer. www.channel3000.com/news/it-cert...

"America has no king" seems like a good theme to rally around

Hundreds of political scientists sign letter "to express our urgent concern about threats to the basic design of American government and democracy" and ask administration to "reverse course" on actions that "can undermine democracies and destroy the rule of law." drive.google.com/file/d/1lGk2...

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

Take aways from our collaboration between media partners and academia on Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects of AI: 1️⃣ Navigating dual roles; 2️⃣ Aligning expectations and output; and 3️⃣ Devising a process of reciprocal knowledge sharing And: ensuring such collaborations are valued in research!

As I was saying. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

Awwww

Staffers at the nation’s cybersecurity agency whose job is to ensure the security of U.S. elections have been placed on administrative leave, jeopardizing critical support provided to state and local election offices across the country. abcnews.go.com/Politics/wir...

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl. can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

We are not far away from your spouse’s cancer trial stopping, your parent’s Alzheimer’s clinical trial evaporating, your teen’s mental health intervention disappearing. It’s easy to attack universities, but the recent actions from the White House will stop cutting edge medical research very quickly.

Also note that because BlueSky doesn’t demote journalism in some shitty scam to stop people from leaving the platform (like those other dudes), journalism THRIVES on BlueSky.

One of Musk's defining qualities is that he is a conspiracy theorist when it comes to government. He will see some ambiguous information or be presented with an easily debunked tale and he immediately believes the worst.

I feel so, so sorry for my colleagues in the US. How can someone destroy the decades-long lighthouse of science in less than 2 weeks? The US used to be the place to go to do great science and/or learn state-of-the-art medicine. It's just pure madness.

This is what a cap on “indirect costs” through NIH grants will do. Going from >50% of grant total to 15% will change how your local university healthcare systems function everyday.

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Public announcement: if any student, especially in #UWJ201 gets an email from me offering them a paid internship of $400 per week (or something like it), it is a scam! Currently reporting the messages and email address used by the scammers to campus police.

I hope scholars in Europe and political parties that support science are paying close attention to the unfolding US situation. Institutions can easily come under pressure. Actions of individuals can have far reaching consequences. Robust resilience is hard once the attack happens.

They love free speech so much they want to ban studies that contain words they don’t like. They love the country so much they want to close down the most effective soft power tool we have. They love law and order so much they want to violate the constitution.

Women is on the list. Basically any human subjects research is likely to be caught in this.

Justice Scalia used to say that Judges should have a stamp that said, "stupid, but constitutional." Trump's trade policies are stupid, but constitutional. The impoundment of funds and shutting down of an agency, data breaches, ignoring security protocols, are illegal and unconstitutional.

Withholding foreign aid was what Trump was impeached for! The laws have not changed. But he wasn’t convicted so now he is doing it on a much greater scale!

This is not a time for passive citizenship. Silence means approval. So what to do?

This is a constitutional crisis: the President doesn't have the power to cancel funds appropriated by Congress. Also, the math is insane; there is NO way to cut $4B/day by getting rid of "fraud". Cuts of that magnitude will dangerously undermine the core functions of government.

This has been one of the most shocking parts to me. We spent months interviewing people in federal agencies regarding cross agency data sharing (not even external) and the rigidity of the statutes, rules, and understanding, were incredible. Ensuring privacy was paramount.

Trump censoring not just what researchers can work on in the future, but also the publication of past research already completed.

An unelected, erratic, ketamine-addled billionaire with far right/white nationalist views has taken control of the personnel and payment systems of the United States government. Not an exaggeration, not hyperbole.

After ending Meta's fact-checking partnerships, Mark Zuckerburg said that it had never been broadly accepted. According to a new poll by @bostonu.bsky.social, nearly 2 in 3 US adults agree that fact-checkers *should* verify claims on social media. A 🧵 (1/n). www.bu.edu/articles/202...
