I was in Milan and Rome in April, yes. but I AM coming back to Italy in May, for a book tour for the new edition of my little Darwin book, with a new Foreword by my friend Telmo Pievani. In Milan on May 20, I believe...at Teatro Franco Parenti? Thanks for your interest, Roberto!

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

Read it, friends. You'll fly into new zones of understanding.

On Thursday, I'll be talking about AIR-BORNE at the Frenchtown Bookshop, in Frenchtown NJ. frenchtownbookshop.com/events/23617...

But they got the job done last night. Go, Leafs.

This is now CBS? Ed Murrow is rolling over in his grave. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/22/b... But good for Bill Owens.

Thanks, Tom. Very glad it seems helpful. Good luck with So Very Small!

Question for literary geezers: How many of us believe that Raymond Chandler's best novel, after "The Long Goodbye," is a neglected one, "The High Window"? Never mind the movies. The books.

Thank the @nytimes.com and @washingtonpost.com for acting as enablers of this antiscience narrative (as @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social & recount in #ScienceUnderSiege)

The @nytimes.com conveniently fails to acknowledge it's own role in promoting lab leak conspiracy narratives (as @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social & I detail in #ScienceUnderSiege) that have enabled these politically-motivated attacks on science: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/18/h...

1. The DOJ has sent threatening letters to several medical journals, focused around whether these journals are spreading misinformation that harms the American people and suppressing alternative viewpoints. I study how the norms and institutions of science facilitate discovery and self-correction.

This is very cool. Thanks, Carl. Dimethyl sulfide is my new favorite niche molecule . . . and it's Air-Borne! Watch for Carl's new book by that title. Unrelated to the possibility of life on K2-18b, but also very cool. @carlzimmer.com www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/s...

They're cute. But . . . time to hire some municipal jaguars?

Undocumented immigrants paid an effective federal income tax rate of 5.27% in 2022. That means they paid a higher effective tax rate than 5 of the richest Americans…and a higher effective tax rate than 55 mega corporations. So let me ask you: who are the real freeloaders?

Horseshoe crabs aren't actually crabs!? 🤯 Despite their name, these prehistoric arthropods are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than true crabs. They are also an invaluable research organism. 🦀 Read more: www.mbl.edu/research/res... Footage: BioQuest Studios

There’s a wrongly imprisoned man rotting in a brutal prison while Trump openly mocks him but don’t worry because the judge took a “stern tone” & “scolded” the administration. That’s sure to work!

No, we're in, thanks, she's very cool.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you. The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

My dear ones, it has occurred at long last. Mitch Marner's 27th goal in the third period is his 100th point of the season. His first time over 100, after two consecutive excruciatingly close seasons at 97 and 99. We celebrate this special player. #MarnerPointWatch #Century

Let’s be clear. When the President defies the Supreme Court, it is the role of Congress to remove him from office. Full stop.

Sympathies. Could be worse, though, right? Ask Venice?

Correct. I forgot to specify that.

There's a concept of governance that worked. For a while. Two points for saying where I was (but disqualified if you're reading Mary Beard).

Survivors. Weedy, like us.

Calla lilies growing wild in a Milano park. Made me smile.

Want to Save the Bees? Focus on Habitat, Not Honey Bees xerces.org/blog/want-to... Few things seem to me more Important these days than the survival of bumblebees and butterflies. God bless (metaphor) @xerces.bsky.social and the great Bob Pyle

Thanks, Rob. Yes, I've felt the same way for a long time too. "De-extinction" is a stunt that doesn't "fix" ecosystems, but merely shows off cloning skills one individual animal (or 2, if you count hybrid "dire wolves" at a time.

"De-extinction" is distracting baloney served by molecular whiz kids who don't understand population biology or conservation.

I heard rumor he's living with his daughter in Vancouver, and in rehab again.

Release tomorrow, February 26 at BN.com

Well said, Lar. But we'll never forget R. Crumb.

In Italy this week. Milano on Friday, amid Design Week, I'll be part of the Opposites United event, doing a panel with Reza Negarestani and Serenella Iovin. drive.google.com/drive/u/0/fo... sponsored by @zero.eu and @kiaworldwide. Should be an interesting conversation.

Fine: work and family. Notwithstanding the polity.

THIS IS TERRIFYING‼️ Dr. Peter Marks, former head of vaccines at the FDA, just had his last day—forced to resign or be fired because he wouldn’t lie about vaccines. He gives a chilling warning: the U.S. is unprepared for biowarfare—because the response team has been gutted.

I kind of want to go

Social murder.

Nothing will kill more children than the ongoing decimation of CDC, NIH, and USAID work to lift vaccine uptake in the US and world. Child survival rose 75% in the last 50 years. Vaccines account for 40% of that. Measles vax alone was 60% of the benefit. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Have a fine time in Greenland, VP and Mrs. Vance. Looks like you won't need that Greenlandic phrasebook. Or the Danish one either.

I think there is going to be a Red Rural Recession and soon if all the cuts continue as is All the firings, cancelling of grants and contracts with companies , the closing of offices, disproportionately impact small towns, cities and states. Their finances will be turned upside

Thanks, Mr. President. But what about that "everything going on right now..."? Please speak up about that.

Hundreds in Bozeman as well…

Do not burn Teslas. Do not attack Tesla dealerships. Do not threaten people with violence. All of that is stupid, useless, and criminal. Instead, just don't buy a Tesla. And if you own one, sell it. Those consumer actions make a whole lot more sense.

I just watched a story about a teacher in Idaho fighting back after being forced to take down a sign that said, "Everyone is Welcome Here." This kind of stuff is beyond STUPID. If someone is offended by a "Everyone is Welcome Here" sign, they have psychological issues that need to be dealt with.

The administration is removing phone support for Soc Security recipients. Making it more difficult for seniors to get their checks. It’s a back door way to cut SS benefits. Horrific. If you know anyone who is impacted, please help them get online to get their benefits approved

The only fair way to handle this is to appoint a team of teenagers to tear this company limb from limb until we find out what kind of financial damage they are hiding and where
