Report links disgraced Milwaukee cop to high-profile deportation

New consumer sentiment data just out for April: Americans’ expectations for how the economy will fare over the next year are now at their worst in 45 years. Consumer confidence is down 40% since Trump’s inauguration, including a 20% drop among Republicans.

NEW: The Board of Immigration Appeals has been formally reduced from 28 members to 15 members, an action which "coincidentally" purges every single Board member appointed during the Biden administration. This comes as the BIA faces record backlogs — which will now get much worse.

Somehow, the future is both going to be a dystopian techno sci-fi hellscape AND we're gonna have coal and measles and robber barons and a permanent underclass. Philip K. Dickens

Great thread showing major media orgs helped Trump by spreading blatant misinformation about the tariff "pause".

I think it's very important to note that when you want to run human misery like a business--a business based on rounding up people to ship them to a country they aren't from to work in forced labor camps--you're a slaver. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

it is because they want to impoverish the country! they don’t want high end manufacturing. they want americans working subsistence wages making t shirts and clothes hangers

We are speedrunning the Declaration of Independence, folks.

As the industry disintegrated, the remnants specifically selected for people who do well in bureaucracies and don’t feel comfortable challenging the status quo. Those are not the people you want running the store when fascism shows up.

Sec. Rollins claimed freezing USDA funding to Maine would "not impact federal feeding programs or direct assistance to Mainers; if a child was fed today, they will be fed tomorrow." My office learned tonight that's not the case. USDA froze the funds to administer child nutrition programs in Maine.

Look it was either this or having to say they/them once in a while

Hard to watch: @newsweek.com posted footage of masked ICE agents arresting 50-year-old grandmother Angela Gonzalez, who'd been here since she was 11. She had a pending VAWA application, but other than that, had no options for a green card since she got here too late for the Reagan amnesty.

So just to recap: 1. The reciprocal tariffs aren't reciprocal. The rates announced by Trump are unrelated to the tariffs charged by other countries. Imports from Brazil, which imposes relatively high tariffs, will face lower rates than countries that impose little or no tariffs on US goods.

Trump is imposing a 10% tariff on the Heard and McDonald Islands. The Heard and McDonald Islands are uninhabited.

The reason that the US is locking up tourists for weeks in hellish detention centers rather than letting them book tickets back home is because the detention centers are owned by corporations. They are charging the taxpayers fortunes to cage these people, and making bonanzas off their suffering.

In 1862, a Union soldier found cigars wrapped in a piece of paper in a field of clover. The paper was a copy of Confederate Gen. Lee's invasion orders. The Southern sloppiness helped the Union stop Lee at Antietam. It's unknown who lost the orders in the field, or if he was related to Pete Hegseth.

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time: Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves. Q: Why are you running away? Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels. Q: But you’re foxes! Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.

Today, we got long-term budget projections from the Congressional Budget Office assuming the 2017 tax law isn’t made permanent. It’s worth delving into how we got there—as recently as 13 years ago CBO was projecting a declining debt burden even though the retirement of the Baby Boomers was known. 🧵

I think most people (myself included) don’t have an intuition for orders of magnitude (e.g., the difference between millionaire and billionaire). One way to appreciate this is time, since we all experience it. Here's the difference between a thousand, a million, and a billion seconds.

Woah -- "the mandate of the electorate." This isn't "like" a dictator, or "creeping toward authoritarianism." This is just it. Anyone who says otherwise now is supporting it.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

18 U.S.C. § 793(f) makes it a federal crime to for people entrusted with information related to the national defense to, with gross negligence, disclose it to others in violation of that trust.

"On October 8, 1931, a law went into effect requiring every Italian university professor to sign an oath pledging their loyalty to the government of Benito Mussolini.
