You aren't going to agree with every action taken, and not everything folks do is going to be what you would do. But none of you are movement managers whose insights are going to get us out of this mess either. Do your part—which if we're honest, a lot of you aren't. You're just talking.

I told partner about the NYC mayoral debate/panel question about what country would you visit first. We are in Seattle but partner who does not follow NYC politics much cracked: "the candidates all should have said Turkey". 🤣🤣

Guess I should try this! It's easy to get to Lucile and Airport but previouslu after that is quite ugh.

100 walk on passengers board faster than 50 vehicles so why shouldn't they be rewarded for having less impact??

I thought it was useful to note how convenient Bellevue being part of KCLS is because it means they have a downtown branch. It's actually good that the KCLS system has wealthier cities participating and makes KCLS accessible to more folks.

The US must stop using Americans' tax dollars to arm and fund Israel as it commits genocide against Palestinians.

Bellevue uses the county library. There's a lovely branch a couple minutes walk from the Downtown Bellevue light rail station. It's great!

Certainly there are worse places you could have moved in summer of 2020, at least in terms of covid risk and local government capacity! Anyway welcome!

So did I! I was on immune suppressing meds for a couple years at that point (still am), quite worried about catching covid (as given my health history seemed likely to go very bad for me). Getting my first two doses there made me feel SO connected and like everyone cared.

Yeah my experience with these features across multiple platforms is admins control it and it's super frustrating because few who likes these features considers consent of others important. :(

Yep. It was not by any means a perfect response – and we had huge advantages in terms of big employers and proportion of office workers in controlling spread – but it seems a fine example that it IS possible to address communicable disease robustly!

I have many many quibbles with many decisions made locally – public park playgrounds stayed officially closed for way too long! – but all the people in charge had huge budget issues and were frantically trying to make good decisions with incomplete information. But it worked!

King County, WA had some of the earliest and most robust responses – and wealth and public leaders to support it. And one of the lowest covid death rates. We re-opened schools when vaccines were rolling out to at risk people and when teachers and staff could get them. Huge public vax centers!

Listenes to both Fackler and Lin on Hacks & Wonks (diff episodes) the other day and ... yeah. The live toots from Erica kind of seem similar.

So, uh, what if you or your partner or other household members can't drive? I'm guessing there's not a bus stop with frequent service right there.

If there is some issue you care about, it really matters to write to your local paper! They are hard to write because they are so short. It helps if others of like mind in a paper's region are all writing on the same topic. They will probably only publish one but it will reach a lot of folks.

If AI is so great, why does every application and web service I've been using for years have to put intrusive popups and popovers in my face – or turn on AI features without asking?

I am certain it means that I have forgotten to put something important on the calendar because every other saturday and sunday all month has something.

people should not have to show up repeatedly in overwhelming numbers to keep projects they already voted for built in a timely fashion.

Sent a personal one. Given recent events on Rainier near I-90 I can't help but think about how little process there was for segments of I-90 and how destructive freeways are to communities in comparison to light rail stations which can improve them.

Also a year or so ago I insisted we buy a good print map for family road trips even if partner does tend to use the map apps. Good for kiddo and backup!
comment in response to

I to be honest use modern mapping apps like it's a print map. Sure it makes me a route and I look at the route and then decide what makes sense. Granted I use it for bike or walking routes not driving. But even when I drove still I tended to not use them turn by turn etc.

Just to say the obvious thing first: I *do* care. There is no way this guy's wife and 5 kids knew that his dumb ass was planning to light a Holocaust survivor on fire, and only the most fascist White House in US history would be posting "FAMILY ARRESTED" about anyone for any reason. This sucks.

You have Iowa though! Most wind power in the country! Or was for a long while. Bus so much climate progress (and air pollution / health progress) could be made with just better transit (and better walking/biking safety).

So amazingly around here almost all the electricity (at least in Seattle City Light service area) is renewables (hydro, solar, etc.) I don't know about King County Metro buses that would charge in other regions in the city (once electrified). My concern is more around sequencing and priorities.
comment in response to

Btw support the @theurbanist.org with $$ if you can. So much reporting they do is at details the other outlets don't get into if they mention the same issues at all.
comment in response to
post
No one except a handful of transit nerds would ride the bus because it's electric. People who are being forced out due to hosting costs to cheaper pockets of the county can't afford EVs and transit isn't reliable or frequent so those that can will keep driving.
comment in response to
post
This goes for EV private passenger vehicles too. Basically every climate plan in the state addresses transportaton emissions by assuming an unrealistic and rapid transition to EVs. We subsidize them wildly compared to subsidizing non-car modes which leaves people who can't drive behind.
