Supporters of Ukraine just unfurled the world’s biggest 🇺🇦 flag on the White House ellipse calling for the U.S. not to abandon the country in its efforts to resist the Russian attack.

I am trying to give Murphy the new Elon Musk haircut but he keeps insisting it looks too Fascist.

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933. I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

As a US state, Canada would be much more in line with the Democratic Party, ignoring the generations of hate Canadians would have for Republicans. It is inconceivable that Republicans would let Canada be a state in a US democracy. I know that is obvious but Trump might just be really dumb.

Federal marshals forced entry into the US African Development Foundation and escorted Musk staffers inside, after agency employees resisted their entry. Once inside, they changed the federal agency’s locks. Musk staffers were seen plugging in an external hard drive and going through everything.

I wrote about how Trump is destroying American democracy, along with eight crucial lessons about how to counteract it, drawing on my 14 years of studying brave pro-democracy opposition movements in authoritarian regimes across the globe. We’re in serious trouble, but there’s still hope.

Thirty states & DC still have laws on the books that allow forced sterilization. Some of the laws aren’t even that old—in 2019, Iowa and Nevada passed new forced sterilization laws for people under guardianship. Both passed unanimously. via @metrauxjulia.bsky.social motherjones.com/politics/202...

so trump is doing his #SOTU speech tonight, and we *know* - yes, we do - that trump is going to declare some kind of national emergency that will allow him to turn our armed forces into his personal organized street thugs. question is, what is he going to lie about to set up his excuse?

If you were looking for a unified theory explaining the last 20 years of Supreme Court politics, you could do a lot worse than “Citizens United was a direct reaction to Obama winning, and Shelby County was a direct reaction to Obama winning again”

Think about how a real functioning government would handle any possible changes to Social Security. The lead up and information would be overwhelming. Republicans will carry this stinking thief in the night around their necks for generations. They are done as a normal political party.

If you look closely, you can see an America First bro in the doorway yelling, "why aren't you wearing a suit?" and "did you say thank you?"

To go along with our piece today, we published an extensive list of folks associated with DOGE. It builds off and adds to the strong work that Wired, WaPo, ProPublica and other pubs have been doing. The public has a right to know who is dismantling the government. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Extraordinary image: EU leaders solemnly lined up in Kyiv to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Let's hope they can back up the symbolism with action. (I wish a Ukraine-supporting American leader were standing there with them.)

It seems clear that we are entering a period more like Stalin’s Soviet Union than anything Nazi. Show trials, populations moved out of their homes, the threat of nuclear annihilation, disease and famine sparked by incompetence, closed borders, cultural limitations, and decades of cronyism.

We cannot expect much loyalty from these people in terms of irs and tax return secrets.

For no particular reason, what the Commonwealth of Virginia thinks about kings.

Many historians have noticed the number of PhDs and MDs that were some of the Nazis’ biggest monsters but I think it is important to remember that the secret to creating a thug class is finding people who can only succeed through loyalty. Those Nazis with degrees were often lazy and/or unlikeable.

So while this was happening yesterday in the House, the Senate filed an *even worse* bill in Iowa that mirrors the "sue over books you don't like" bill in Idaho. This is all being done quickly so as to create worse bills while you're distracted. Iowa, make calls ASAP. legiscan.com/IA/bill/SF34...

How many people would be willing to not pay their taxes for three years? I realize most people have taxes pulled out of their pay, but there must be some way to make it clear that we are not paying for this Trump bullshit governing.

Iowa's House File 274, which would criminalize librarians, passes out of the House Education Committee. It can now be heard on the floor. What this bill is, what it would mean for library and school workers, and why it was rushed through. bookriot.com/iowa-rushes-...

Here is the ad the Washington Post accepted and then rejected:

This is why so many Jews are skeptical of the national GOP claim of support — it rings hollow & opportunistic. Vance visits a Nazi concentration camp, lays a wreath at a statue stating “Never Again,” calls it an “unspeakable evil,” & then promptly meets with & promotes a German Nazi-aligned party.

Without going all Martin Niemöller here, I do think that it's bad not to speak up for immigrants, transgender Americans, civil servants, women, Ukraine, and everyone else the MAGA bullies are going after. We're beyond picking and choosing whom to defend. It's time to stand up and speak out.

Very much so. Though the whole idea never had any virtue.

Elon Musk is a terrible president.

Knowing the names of the an unelected oligarch’s underlings who are destroying the government from within is a crime now, apparently.

The men carrying out Musk's coup are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran. Make them famous. And, eventually, when possible, arrest them and charge them with multiple felonies. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...
