It’s not hyperbole to say that American science is being destroyed before our eyes.

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

This is entirely preventable. Science solved this problem more than 60 years ago.

This is what obeying in advance looks like. The NSF fires 10% of its total staff in a move that went beyond what was requested by the current regime. The NSF is the flagship of US basic research infrastructure. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋 www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

This is fucking stupid.

Finally. This is exactly the kind of track evolution video that I've been wanting to see. Thanks, ESA.

☄️ 🔭 The impact probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 has dropped from 2.8% to 0.16%. Thanks to new observations, Earth is now at the edge of our shrinking ‘uncertainty window.’ If this trend continues, the risk may soon reach 0%.

“…every major technological transformation in the US, from electric cars to Google to the iPhone, can trace its roots back to basic science research once funded by the federal government.” 🌍🧪

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

USDA says it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu and is trying to rehire them In a statement, an Agriculture Department spokesperson told NBC News that officials are "working to swiftly rectify the situation." www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

This morning, the US National Science Foundation fired 168 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, for no cause other than they were the agency's most recent hires. 🧪 Co-workers are leaving supportive messages before they have to clear out of the building at 5 p.m. Sent to me by a source ⬇️

Giving infectious disease research a break, as promised by the MAHA agenda. Let's break down what exactly this Executive Order is *really* saying. Fortunately, I speak fluent anti-vax grifterese & can translate. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that a lot of additional people will die because of this.

In less-than-terrible news, both NASA and NOAA released their expected monthly climate updates this week (warmest January on record), and NOAA continues to collect and publish weather monitoring data. One month down, only 47 more to go...

The extent of sea ice globally is now at an absolute record low level for the entire satellite-era. [Graphics: zacklabe.com/global-sea-i.... Note: the poles are affected by very different Earth system processes/seasonality. I am using 5-day running mean data.]

🤣

It's going to be an ugly four years for US scientists.

The true test of commitment to ones morality is whether you follow it even if it disadvantages you. For nearly 50 years, the US prohibited publicly traded companies from bribing foreign officials. But I guess prohibiting bribery was bad for business, so... www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Yes this agency is more or less a free enormous benefit for the public and a cost to rich frauds

“Why do I need NOAA? I’ve got a weather app.” Is equivalent to asking “Why do I need farms? I can go to the supermarket.” www.noaa.gov/about-our-ag...

Rose is an inspiration. I know there are biggest things going on, but this one really gets to me.

Woah! This is going to have a devastating effect on many research universities.

A show of support to the scientists and staff at NOAA. This is among the best collection of scientists in the world who provide an invaluable public service via data and forecasting. Their work proves essential for daily operations of the military to commerce to the rest of the private sector.

Anyone have experience as a data consumer using WMO WIS 2.0 to access weather data? I'm looking for advice on what tools (wis2box?) / platforms you used, and where to get started?

Is there a public archive somewhere of the observational data that @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social is using to feed the ERA5 reanalysis? Not just a list of sources, but the actual data. I've tried looking for it, but so far haven't found such an archive.

No global warming if you ignore the rest of the globe?

I just spoke with NOAA public affairs person who confirms that the GML site is down to "scheduled 5-year maintenance of the electrical switchgear" at lab site in Boulder, and will be back online by 6pm MST today. www.boulder.noaa.gov/public-affai...

I've deleted my post about NOAA's Global Monitoring Lab being offline. Feedback I've gotten indicates a power outage is affecting NOAA's Boulder, CO facilities related to maintenance work. Hence, this (presumably temporary) outage seems unrelated to recent government actions.

NetCDF is a great file format, but if you've been releasing a text format for 10+ years, I am going to be annoyed if you replace it with NetCDF. If you simultaneously remove important metadata? Well, I might need to borrow some of @micefearboggis.bsky.social's flying monkeys...
