NEW: USAID's acting asst administrator, Nick Enrich, has been placed on leave after sharing a memo detailing how political appointees have "wholly prevented" staff from continuing life saving aid.

I've been shouting about the fact that Rs are coming for birth control since the first round of this nightmare. Here's the playbook, from the excellent @jessicavalenti.bsky.social : open.substack.com/pub/jessica/...

I was trying not to doom scroll today but HOLY SHIT.

@jgrossman.bsky.social was featured in an ABC News article about NARA. The head of NARA, the archivist of the United States, is “the steward of those billions of records, which belong to the American people,” said Grossman. 🗃️

My current state of mind:

Looking forward to all the WaPo op-eds about the personal liberties of controlling one’s own reproduction, determining one’s own gender expression, finding one’s own definition of sexual satisfaction, choosing one’s own definition of family…

Fun Fact: Although Medicare provides health insurance to senior citizens, it doesn't cover long-term care like senior living facilities. Do you know what most seniors have to do to pay for these services? Sell their homes, sell their assets, and go on Medicaid. Because Medicaid *does* cover it.

Here's my new WaPo op ed: abortion rights are a personal liberty and represent the right of patients to access the freedom of the medical market. Done.

It's not a splashy oped in the NYT, but please, I did 16 years of legal and historical research to understand the legislative intent and historical/political motivations for the Reconstruction Amendments. 28 pages, ungated, written accessibly for smart lay audiences. 👇

For the #DoingFeministLegalWork #Morrigan blog, I wrote about how trans rights rhetoric is hollowed out by the denial of full social citizenship, and how real trans liberatory work is the only way forward. dflw.ie/trans-rights...

US Historian friends: Are any of you aware of actions that may be in the works to defend the precious US National Archives, The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Museums, Gettysburg National Military Park and countless other historic sites, etc.?

these are segregationists.

If you want to understand the SB halftime show, read this.

"Trump’s meddling in NARA is very likely the beginning of an attempt to control and shape the historical record itself, including what is destroyed and what is preserved from his presidency."

Every 4 years, a team of libraries & research organizations work together to preserve material from U.S. government websites during the transition of administrations. 🗳️ Get the latest on the 2024/2025 End of Term Web Archive @eotarchive.org ➡️ blog.archive.org/2025/02/06/u...

This argument is popping up everywhere. Here’s what’s wrong with it. The Supreme Court has never addressed the question of whether people named Ilan Wurman have the right to speak incorrectly about the 14th Amendment. That’s not the relevant question where the force of precedent is concerned.

NEW: An internal email obtained by WIRED from a threat intelligence team monitoring US Treasury systems advised labeling DOGE operatives an "insider threat," adding that it recommended suspending their access "immediately." | www.wired.com/story/treasu...

“The Framers of the 14A didn’t think about illegal immigration. It didn’t exist in 1868.” Commonly believed but not true. The biggest counterexample: enslaved people, imported in violation of a congressional ban. The Framers still guaranteed birthright citizenship. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

We are likely about to see a mass purging of archival documents and restricted access to researchers. This will be part of the regime’s effort to rewrite history itself.

Anyone else listening to R.E.M a lot lately? 🤔

💯👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The AHA & the @oah.org have released a joint statement on the presidential executive order “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K–12 Schooling.” “We reject the premise that it is ‘anti-American’ or ‘subversive’ to learn the full history of the United States.” 🗃️

Few people are actually as brave as Elphaba, even though many of us want to see ourselves in her. In the face of rising authoritarianism, most people will act like Glinda. Out of fear, they will find themselves aligning with evil in a desire to protect their own safety. #wicked

"This is the dismantling not just of entire federal agencies, but of an entire architecture of democratic self-governance, by a man who believes we will not be able to name it quickly enough to stop it" Thank you @dahlialithwick.bsky.social, @mjsdc.bsky.social for naming it slate.com/news-and-pol...

Women’s uniforms has always been an issue for the military. During WWII, the situation was so bad and the need so urgent that they brought Dorothy Shaver from Lord&Taylor to oversee it all. It’s how we got couture-designed uniforms. Wrote about it here: www.washingtonpost.com/made-by-hist... #HATM

This is a constitutional crisis: the President doesn't have the power to cancel funds appropriated by Congress. Also, the math is insane; there is NO way to cut $4B/day by getting rid of "fraud". Cuts of that magnitude will dangerously undermine the core functions of government.

is it good or bad that a billionaire oligarch with close ties to foreign dictators is currently downloading the most sensitive information the us federal government has about its citizens to his own private servers?

Feels like we are living in the first third of a Star Wars opening crawl

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

Good beginning thoughts fr @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social folks about potential/coming changes in federal research funding & scholarly pub Inc the fate of OSTP’s Nelson Memo. I’ll be jumping into a next round on this. scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/01/30/a...

The Economist, tongue in cheek, is calling it “Project 1897” instead of project 2025. It’s a nod to Trump’s reactionary & regressive return to the policies of McKinley. (Pro monopolists, pro tariffs, pro territorial expansion).

My author's copies arrived on the day where an EO was passed about telling the full American experience as indoctrination. As the product of AfAm porches, I will be loud, proud, and continue to speak their truth as well as my own to power even in this political environment.
