My research group is well funded, and I'm terrified. All scientific labs run on slim margins, typically 12-24 months from running out of $. NIH is not reviewing proposals right now- the wave of labs shutting down is looming closer. All scientists are anticipating a major precipice. Options? 1/5

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

The fact that this communication is now necessary ... for conferences happening in the *US* ... shocking.

Btw if you’re looking for a list of TERFs to block, this is a good one. Block the whole list and new additions will just be automatically blocked. Your Bluesky life will be peaceful and prosperous bsky.app/profile/did:...

Important info for all the new people who just followed me: *Generative AI is a bullshit boondoggle *Gender is fake and trans people are real *Fascism is bad *Picard > Kirk Stick around if that works for you, I guess.

Trump's lawyers are absolutely flailing in the courts right now

San Diegans, our duty is clear. We've done it before and we can do it again.

my awesome @voiceofsandiego.org colleagues @bellamayaross.bsky.social and Xavier Vasquez teamed up to make this excellent 90s-style PSA video about how best to attend public meetings. music is from yours truly :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=atBe...

This is a gift 🤌😘

Hey NOAA, FEMA and federal scientists and staff — I’m a climate reporter at NPR. To share info anonymously, you can reach me on Signal at sommer.55

A proposal: Academic researchers and folks in similar positions, consider writing an op-Ed, or at least a letter to the editor, in your local paper about what these horrific decisions will do to jobs and services *in your local community*. I train scientists to write op-Ed’s and I can help.

Boy howdy, do I, a trans woman, have some thoughts about how the gender revolution put a lot more emphasis on letting girls do boy stuff, and almost none on letting boys do girl stuff, which if anything reinforced the idea that girl stuff is inferior if not shameful.

Thank you @kpbssandiego.bsky.social for spotlighting such an important story

Saying ‘women’ is not allowed, but ‘men’ and ‘white’ are OK? I’m (not) shocked | Arwa Mahdawi

What's your sign?

"Conducted devastated [sic] takedowns of scientists" = "some people got a light slap on the wrist for sexual harassment", doesn't it?

there's a joke here but also, antidepressants and ADHD medications are literally lifesaving for millions of Americans, and if you try to take away my lifesaving medication I will react appropriately

Epidemic intelligence service officers are the cream of the cream. They're top doctors, veterinarians & other health professionals. They sign up for a two-year training program to serve the country. Not only is terminating them bad for the country, it's also a disgraceful violation of a commitment.

EIS is the best of the best. It's an incredibly competitive fellowship that recruits outstanding medical researchers. They are often the first ones on the scene trying to make sense of mystery outbreaks and public health emergencies. This is not who we want to be firing right now

Alternatives to calling someone or something "crazy" when they're doing fascism. instead of "crazy" → fascist instead of "lunatic" → fascist instead of "schizo" → fascist instead of "psycho" → fascist instead of "bipolar" → fascist instead of "schizo" → fascist instead of "insane" → fascist

The language in this MAHA Exec Order validates antivax, science contrarian, wellness industry, and conspiracy theory talking points we've seen for years. The phrasings may be subtle/debatable to some, but as subtle as a heart attack to anyone who has been following these subcultures for a while. 🛟🧪😷

What's wild is that a lot of these are completely routine natural science grants that someone threw a DEI word onto for broader impact purposes.

I don't think people understand that academia is full of people who LOVE the status quo and are happy for an excuse to do "real" work without pesky distractions like "not sexually harassing students" or "getting in trouble for saying wildly racist stuff"

Judges aren't kidding around. Federal judge not only just blocked Trump administration's attempt to cut NIH's funding of indirect costs (emergency motion for TRO was earlier today). The judge has also imposed a reporting requirement to ensure compliance.⬇️ storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Star Trek did say the 2020s were gonna be a little rough

Uh, this is a nuclear bomb on university budgets if I am reading it correctly. Mandating an indirect cost rate of 15% *overnight*?

Anybody who does not put Earthsea in their top 3 is fundamentally untrustworthy

The thing about being incurious dillweeds is that they heard this phrase, did not bother to look it up, and just ran with comparing themselves to one of the most notorious villains in literature who gets destroyed at the hands of a ragtag group of double brunchers armed with weaponized hope

CORPORATE DEI WEBINAR: If you meet someone from East Asia, you should avoid asking "So which kind are you?" JACUZZI DEALERSHIP OWNER: Well, that's it. Time to start the Fourth Reich.

I know that there are good people in university leadership trying to figure out what to do. And: This thread does seem to fit the data fairly well. I doubt it explains all the variance, but probably not none.

Dear US scientists, We've been hearing a lot of questions of the form "Why aren't universities doing anything!? They need to speak out!" We can explain. It's bad news. We're on our own. But understanding why can help us all figure out our plan. Read along in thread 1/x 🧪
