I completely see your point Rachel. I'm sure greater minds than mine will sort this out. But I agree with taking the higher road and not sinking to the level of discourse we have seen coming from the other side.

This doesn't mean that PP won't lose the leadership. That may still happen in time. The question is maybe whether the next leader will be any better.

In theory a member of his party just voluntarily takes one for the team and resigns their newly won seat...

'But Canadian conservatism May now be moving on'. I dearly hope you are right. It was too close for comfort.

And a few recounts to go! It seems that the flips were on verification. This is the most exciting election of my lifetime.

Plus who would they replace him with. It just wouldn't likely be better.

I'm not even hoping for a new leader. For me it's very questionable that the current Conservative party can agree on a leader who is likeable and holds mainstream views. And I don't think that's a good thing for Canada.

Thanks for this. I knew this kind of thing had happened before but couldn't come up with an example.

Just to clarify, it's called a minority government as opposed to a majority government where one party holds a majority of seats and can pass legislation on its own votes. I guess it's not a thing in a two-party system.

As he should. The message from Carlton has been sent. Poilievre is still, for now, the leader of the loyal opposition.
comment in response to

Yes. To pass legislation the Liberal party will need support from at least 4 other members of parliament. But they have a choice of 3 parties who can provide that support. One, the Conservative party, is generally unlikely to do so.

If I'm not mistaken his ire was prompted by a case about bike lanes. Bike lanes for god's sake. Sheesh
comment in response to

Whether he stays at Stornoway or not. Whether he finds a seat or not. He has been sent a message. A majority of Canadians said no.
comment in response to

Exactly. Bike lanes make everyone safer! Doug's outburst against judges yesterday was completely unhinged.

I was thinking structural inequality and rampant disinformation. The debates debacle being one example among many.

It's definitely not over. We as Canadians need to think deeply about what is making such a negative political approach as Poilievre's appeal to so many people and address ourselves to the root causes. There will be another election...
comment in response to
post
I'm not sure. But I'm pretty sure that whether they keep Poilievre or have a leadership race we'll be looking at the same negative tone. Sigh.
comment in response to
post
It's pretty much standard practice when the leader loses. It'll happen, unless, of course, the party decides they don't want Poilievre after a leadership review.

Truly. Thank you for reminding us of this. At this point I'm clinging to every shred of normalcy I can find.

Well that could be awkward. What if she wasn't voting for him?...

I imagine there will be a few recounts. We won't know for sure until that plays out. The suspense is killing me.
comment in response to

It would kinda be a full term if it were a majority. Not-so-much if it's a minority. Still waiting to find out.

What we really need to do now is work to overcome the disinformation and fascism that resulted in the close race last night. It will be harder to beat them next time.

Maybe one of the most important aspects of a free and fair democracy. Barrier-free access to the ballot box.

I saw one once here in Canada. They hide out among the rushes. Lucky find!

The good news is that Ontarians, for some reason, like our provincial and federal governments to be from opposite parties. Here's hoping.
comment in response to

Sooooo true. Here in Canada I have always voted after less than a 5 minute wait. This time I went to the first day of advance polling of which there are only a few days and waited around 1/2 hour. Ease of voting is an important feature of democracy.

First the pandemic. Now the political environment. Showing us things about people we would rather not have known.

'Woke ideology'. Also known as freedom of thought. Yep he wants to get rid of that.

But if he wins you then have to listen to him all the time. Ewwww

I decide to vote in advance polls and I did wait about a half hour in line. Otherwise, I have never waited more than 5 minutes to vote. It's one of my favorite things about Canadian elections. So easy.

The staffers who did this told a reporter what they had done. Of course they considered it a joke.

We are all getting these. I gather if you answer they go on to ask you for your star sign and shoe size. Do not be fooled!

Thank you for giving us a rational answer to this irrational question. The real question might be 'Do I like what the polls are telling me?'.

Thank you Rachel for what you are doing. It is actually good to know you will follow up and give us an accurate assessment. It's so rare in this world.

I agree. I feel like these kinds of questions from the media invite equivocating. This is Canada. There is and should be no question.

You left out the part where the brothers are charming, attractive and appear to be identical twins. This is an important part of the vibe.
