still makes me so happy that I have poisoned Google Search against Prabhakar Raghavan

Newsletter: Microsoft pulled back on over a gigawatt of planned data center capacity, suggesting that they do not think there is a growth future in generative AI. Meanwhile, SoftBank, the only company that can afford to fund OpenAI, has to take out loans to do so. www.wheresyoured.at/power-cut/

Saw a cybertruck and my son asked why Elon Musk would think that looked good and I said "remember that drug they gave you at the hospital when you broke your arm, and you got scared and said everyone had 4 eyes? he takes that all the time"

Please believe I WILL build the stupidest possible deck for this idiot

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

I'm hearing now that *every* technologist CFPB hired to investigate Big Tech was fired this evening. That's somewhere between 70-100 people. wired.com/story/dozens-of-cfpb-workers-terminated-in-after-hours-firing-blitz/

A fundamental story of the last decade is that a lot of basically incompetent people got fed up by competent people telling them they were wrong, constructed a more welcoming alternative ecosystem of competency cosplayers, and then somehow turned the whole government over to them.

"Uyghurs are made to install an app that tracks their communications, and even their children report on them. When children go back to boarding school after the weekend, they’re asked to say whether their family is practicing Islam or speaking Uyghur at home."

Respectfully, you need to stop doomscrolling and get enough rest so you have the energy you need to deal with any new national garbage fires tomorrow. Plus normal life stuff. And don't forget to charge your phone outside of your bedroom.

It's really embarassing losing our democracy to people this fucking weird and gross.

What’s his beef against USAID in particu….oh. Wow.

It feels weird waking up and being personally and professionally happy while the world around me burns.

These are the clowns Congress refuses to stop.

1. Show up. Go to the places Musk is taking over, bring cameras, demand to find out what's going on and where it breaks the law. 2. Refuse to allow standard business to continue unimpeded. Deny unanimous consent, delay votes, etc. 3. Be public about how illegal all of this is 4. Lay out a plan

Something I wrote elsewhere but is relevant here, as we start this first full week of February 2025:

"...that which we consume must be perfectly virtuous, sanitized of all problematic or complicated ideas and depictions, because it has become the stand-in for our very realities, our very political action as citizens; consuming has become our praxis."

incredible things are happening on the federal employee subreddit

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a declassified World War II-era CIA guide to sabotaging fascism in the workplace has become one of the most popular free ebooks on the internet: www.404media.co/declassified...

This bus driver has more guts than 90% of elected Democrats.

I suppose my question is: if you set fire to one end of the rube goldberg machine that is the government, how long does it take for the average person to notice that the other end of the machine is no longer producing widgets?

Yuuuuuup

Significant upswing in zero-post accounts with no followers and pictures of attractive women messaging me here trying to strike up a conversation. Based on my long time on the internet and reading I recognize this means I am becoming an absolute DILF

Actually it’s totally believable.

remember, the blitzkrieg is intended to make you feel like there is nothing you can do about it; that’s the only reason to go forward in this haphazard and sloppy manner all in the first week and the choice of that strategy tells you they are afraid you *will* do something about it

I am resigned to the fact that the D&D alignment that best describes me is Lawful Good, nevertheless from time to time I will indulge in some Chaotic Good, as a treat

"Disaster Paladins"

sometimes you see a headline and you just want to repost it and say "no shit sherlock" no shit sherlock

dropped to Very Positive over the last 30 days, which isn't shocking given the wider audience But it does mean that if YOU enjoyed the game, we'd appreciate a positive review! And while you're at it, please go ahead & leave reviews for the Pets DLC and soundtrack, too 💜💜

I saw this headline as well and am totally perplexed by it. Like the traditional methods of philanthropy that involve a shit ton of paperwork, busywork, and justification by the recipients is somehow *more* sustainable? WTaF?

When I wrote for Law & Order, we fake-murdered more people on all three shows than were actually murdered in NYC that year. And that was just three shows on one network. Murder mysteries make good stories. But they’re just stories. You’re safer than you think.

I’ve noticed that, 9/10 times (in my experience at least), the people who say “well they fucked around and are about to find out” aren’t actually gleeful about it. They’re rueful, furious, bitter, at the end of their rope. Understandably so.

There we are. The best summary of content moderation.

Also, courage is contagious. I continue to stand against American fascism in the hope that others will take heart, too.

"Sorry, we can't make this technology that sucks and nobody wants and that uses enough power to blow up the moon unless we *also* steal people's shit to throw into our content woodchipper in order to produce mediocre digital particleboard out of the cumulative artbarf." futurism.com/the-byte/ope...

How absolutely spineless. It's like they are addicted to losing. Republicans are not statesmen you can debate and compromise with. They are monsters set on dismantling America and selling off the parts. You don't compromise with an existential threat.

I was having a great time in Caves of Qud but then my four-armed short-sword wielding turtle got a fungal infection which caused him to be attacked by a talking cucumber (talking cucumbers HATE fungi) so now I'm on a multi-part quest to develop a cure and I'm having an even better time

Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forgive-them/

Do you like Magic cards? Do you like being able to buy cards online? Please support the USPS, because without it you WILL pay more, for worse options. If USPS shut down tomorrow, all but the biggest online sellers of Magic would shut down overnight. P.s.: this is a political post

ATREUS: father! That's cringe! You can't post that! KRATOS: boy, it is undeniable that this man is orange, much like a Cheeto

Outstanding read. I had no idea the guy who killed Yahoo was in the process of killing Google.
