My students have now submitted 6 IRB applications. They should have been in two weeks ago so I am both very proud and very anxious. They present in a month (and there’s a week of spring break in there).

"Let others wallow in Watergate." Franklin Morse, 1973.

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

I have long believed that not enough has been written about how GOP members have felt physically intimidated by Trump supporters. It doesn’t excuse their cowardice, but it still deserves more attention.

REVEALED: we identified the operator of an overtly racist X account, "GlomarResponder," as ICE Assistant Chief Counsel James Rodden, based on an overwhelming number of biographical details matched through publicly available documents, other social media activity, and courtroom observation.

Everything's working smoothly, nothing to see here.

In case today’s media has forgotten, a reminder from journalist Malcolm W. Browne: “In a free society the duty of all newsmen is to tell all of the people all of the truth all of the time. The newsman is obliged to fight forces that interfere with this vital process."

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

“Many say that while they still love their work — and particularly working with students — they don’t know how long they can maintain their current pace. ‘Most of us are working seven days a week just to keep up… That’s not sustainable at all.’”

Let me ask again: where are presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton. Where are the Fortune 500 CEOs? The university presidents. Is all this “leadership” stuff they tout just words? I don’t want to think so but the question must be asked.

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

Wow This is an extraordinarily dangerous and self-defeating act The CDC’s EIS officers are some of the world’s best respected & trained experts in investigating & controlling outbreaks (they’re nicknamed the “disease detectives”)

The incompetence is staggering Firing people in charge of maintaining the safety of nuclear weapons is insane. This will adversely effect people the environment and our wildlife. www.npr.org/2025/02/13/n...

I have a family member defending/supporting the approval of RFK Jr. they are a retired nurse. Please send vibes that I don’t go nuclear. I’m already the bad egg.

Mitch McConnell voting no on terrible cabinet picks because he doesn’t have to run for reelection is all the proof you need that we must have term limits. You shouldn’t only have a spine because you don’t have to run again. We are breeding chicken shit power hungry electeds.

Just got an email from our admin celebrating our uni becoming an R1 and I can’t even…that’s it. I just can’t even.

@soozlemcdoozle.bsky.social are you safe? Saw the news and couldn’t remember if you are in Munich or Berlin.
