"At the end of the day, Canada is many things. But above all else, we’re a bunch of grudge holding motherfuckers." thebeaverton.com/2025/02/edit...

For people asking for non-meta options I’ll be posting clips tomorrow

TOMORROW: We’re rallying at the Treasury building with @moveon.org to stop Elon Musk’s hostile takeover and tell this unelected billionaire to get his hands off our money. We hope you can join us if you’re in the D.C. area.

A whole bunch of people who were totally cool with posting the addresses of NIH/CDC employees during COVID are now absolutely apoplectic that people would publish the mere names of people forcing their way into government agencies and accessing sensitive data. Weird, huh?

FACT CHECK: Canada has already announced this plan BEFORE Trump announced his tariffs.

Summary of Today in Tariffs: Trump sets house on fire, then congratulates self after putting it out.

If the Democratic leadership in Congress does not want to use democracy, we would like to borrow it for a time.

This is the best silver lining I can think of. *If* we still have a democracy in a few years, we can restore the concept of checks and balances.

Let’s all be clear eyed about this. The regime plans to end our democracy. It feels surreal, but the sooner we start acknowledging this the sooner we can prepare to fight for our freedom

Time to accept that we simply have a mad king. The guy slapping 25% tariffs on Canada's postage while calling for its annexation - and releasing scarce water into the Central Valley to fight already-contained fires in LA - isn't doing a bit or pursuing a secret, rational strategy

Hoping that Trump fails is not a plan. We must develop and foster new movements, structures, tactics, platforms and leaders to oppose Trump and articulate a positive vision. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/buil...

Yes. While there are absolutely things Democrats can and must do to slow, obstruct, etc, GOP hold both House and Senate majorities, severely limiting our options. Johnson and Thune are handing over the own keys and relinquishing their own power. Even for the cynics this should be a shock.

Red state alcohol is currently being removed at B.C. Liquor store in Victoria. #bcpoli

The new regime is an embodiment of rage of the powerful against the powerless for daring to reject the divine right of the oligarchy.

Early capitalism thrives on innovation and competition. Late capitalism is monopolies, financialization, and institutions too weak to check either. Schumpeter saw this coming over 70 years ago. Now Musk has the literal keys to the government bank account.

Institutions are not self-enforcing. The Constitution doesn’t get out of bed in the morning to defend itself. Laws don’t magically apply themselves. Democracy survives because people — judges, officials, voters, everyone —choose to uphold it.

This is the message we need to tape to our mirrors, and remember every day.

The word for this is "coup."

The cruelty and bias towards violence in the MAGA movement is not a side effect, it’s the animating principle.

We’re witnessing a broad assault on that genuinely meritocratic achievement, the civil service—one that could enable right-wing elites to corruptly loot the place, or install a highly “personalist” government marked above all by loyalty to Trump himself, or some combination of the two.

This is governance through chaos and cruelty. This is not a path to democratic renewal. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/u...

If democracy were a person, it’d be texting ‘you up?’ at 2 AM while mainlining caffeine and praying it makes it to the next election cycle. We need something stronger than vibes holding this thing together.
