Carter was the kind of person who could chat with you just once but ask about your kid by name months later. Even though I worked with him for only a few years, this feels like losing someone I’ve known for a lifetime. He will be missed.

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.

Let me get this straight: the authoritarian UK government can just demand the security of any product be compromised for users outside its borders, with no real option to appeal, and it being illegal to reveal that compliance with this request ever occurred.
