#OTD in 1941, not even two weeks into his stint in North Africa, Rommel gave one of his first King Xerxes impressions, complaining about disruptions in the convoy schedule due to adverse weather. #WW2 #militaryhistory #desertwar @cedricmas.bsky.social @rjhammond215.bsky.social

#OTD in 1942 the #royalnavy lost a submarine. HM/Sub P.38, whose only success in the war had been the sinking of north-bound SS Ariosto, carrying Allied POWs, was part of a patrol line to intercept convoy K.18. It ran into Lt.Cdr. Palmas on Tp Circe, who made short work of her. @axe99.bsky.social

Three of the six men in this iconic picture, made #OTD in 1945, would not survive the bloody battle of Iwo Jima, namely Block, Sousley and Strank. (Rene Gagnon is not in the picture, it's Harold Keller.) #WW2 #HISTORY (Hope I have all the names right, now.)

This could happen because Hitler had been agitating and lying for about ten years. The normal thing gets replaced by the abnormal thing. Don't think this couldn't happen in your country. #Trump

If you know any military leaders — from junior NCOs to 4-star generals — probably a good time to reinforce the idea with them that their oath is to the Constitution, not the President, and certainly not the Secretary of Defense.

21st February 1945: first flight of the Hawker Sea Fury. Fast, heavily armed and robust, the aircraft was initially manufactured as a fighter, but most made were FB.11 fighter-bombers. Sea Furies saw extensive FAA and RAN use in the Korean War and were exported to several other countries. 🧵1/6

It will turn ugly in the US. A third did not vote all. Many people are so ignorant. As if there were no history lessons.

Won't be long before Trump announces another name change. 😜

Who can tell me what *this* is??? I found it *on top* of a 4/5-storey building in a former industrial area (rightfully called Industriestr.) in Tempelhof. Looks like a pillbox - but why on top of a building?

News media are failing people. Too lazy to do a proper job, I suppose.

Market Garden failed. Not because roads are narrow in Holland, not because British 30 Corps was slow and not because there were two German Panzer Divisions in the area. It failed because this bridge in Nijmegen was captured too late. Read/buy my two books. pre-jump.nl

Trump's adoration for Putin always has been apparent. So, a President being a Russian asset would be a traitor of the highest order.

Went for a walk around Limehouse in the East End today and came across this “S” “Shelter for 250 Persons” on the wall of the Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Frederick in Commercial Road.

#OTD, 109 years ago, the Battle of Verdun - the longest of the First World War - commenced with an attack across an approximately 30km front. Continuing until 18th December, each side suffered somewhere around 400,000 casualties, and the scars of the battle are still visible across the landscape.
