#OTD in 1942 the #royalnavy lost a submarine. HM/Sub P.38, whose only success in the war had been the sinking of north-bound SS Ariosto, carrying Allied POWs, was part of a patrol line to intercept convoy K.18. It ran into Lt.Cdr. Palmas on Tp Circe, who made short work of her. @axe99.bsky.social

21st February 1945: first flight of the Hawker Sea Fury. Fast, heavily armed and robust, the aircraft was initially manufactured as a fighter, but most made were FB.11 fighter-bombers. Sea Furies saw extensive FAA and RAN use in the Korean War and were exported to several other countries. 🧵1/6

Market Garden failed. Not because roads are narrow in Holland, not because British 30 Corps was slow and not because there were two German Panzer Divisions in the area. It failed because this bridge in Nijmegen was captured too late. Read/buy my two books. pre-jump.nl

#OTD, 109 years ago, the Battle of Verdun - the longest of the First World War - commenced with an attack across an approximately 30km front. Continuing until 18th December, each side suffered somewhere around 400,000 casualties, and the scars of the battle are still visible across the landscape.
