I research, write, and teach about the Quaker tradition. I also write fiction (mainly sapphic romance novels set in prehistory) and poetry. She/her.

I hear Quakerism in the Atlantic World, 1690–1830 is quite good! 😉

Well, that's my weekend sorted... #StAlbans www.hertsad.co.uk/news/2521164...

This Pause for Thought went out in the early hours of Monday morning, and is now also on BBC Sounds. It's about my spiritual journey and being a Quaker and a Pagan, and could have been a lot longer than three minutes! www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Today in adventures of a journal editor: searched online for a scholar to see if they're still working, found a (recent) obituary. Farewell Phyllis Mack and thank you for your contribution to Quaker studies, especially your work on early Quaker women. www.bradleystow.com/bdl/obituary...

Confused myself for a moment there by waking up from a dream in which I was lying in bed looking at my phone to discover that I was lying in bed asleep and therefore not looking at my phone. Quickly put that right to post this!

If you're reading this I want you to know something. You are not too much. You are exactly enough. And I appreciate that so much about you. Thank you for being you. 🤗❤️

Ancient Greek men know nothing about bees. That is the only conclusion one can come to.

Book of the month! Speaking in Quaker Meeting for Worship has been listed as one of June's books of the month by the Quaker Bookshop! I'm also looking forward to the launch event (online with @woodbrooke.bsky.social ). bookshop.quaker.org.uk/books-of-the... www.woodbrooke.org.uk/courses/book...

Yay! 🥳🥳

Thread, up and down. This is what I meant the other day about how the term "AI" muddies conversations. There are ethical uses of machine learning and other technologies that get called "AI." In counter-abuse, machine classification is an essential tool.

Quoting to boost the last bit: contacting a potential research supervisor is a very good idea. An email with some basics about what you want to do and why might lead to a conversation or even advice on your application. If they don't reply you don't know why but the fact is also information. #PhD

Early Neolithic, Mildenhall rim sherd with punctate decoration (rows of ?bone pin-prick impressions). Circa 3700-3500 BC

Did you know June is National #Safety Month? Many issues in #HigherEducation like trauma, wellbeing, mental health and systemic barriers link to safety. This month I'll be sharing lots of ways your #university can prioritise safety, but if there's something you'd like to know, please ask!

Deep breath, lads. In response to the proposed government disability cuts, I wrote a piece about my life before The Daily Tism (it includes a PIP assessment, a mental health crisis and iced Madeira cake). We’ll fight this with everything we’ve got. #TakingThePip

How To Be a Writer, #1835356: Open laptop Observe the disintegration of the world you know Write some words See how the words begin to knit the world back together again, like nanobots rebuilding reality at the molecular level This writing lark. Good, innit? Tea

Thank you, O god/dess, for making queer and trans folks, giving everyone a foretaste of the world to come.

I don't know if I believe in God. But I do believe in that of God in everyone. I'm blessed to see that play out nearly every day

I definitely didn't find all 24, but I enjoyed looking for seals in this picture.

Since it’s not even Pride month yet but I’ve already dealt with this bullshit, it’s biphobia to assume that bi people are in open marriages/non-monogamous. Besides, there are plenty of straight people who are non-monogamous! Sexual identity has nothing to do with it!

I've got a cold which is making me miserable and my plan for the day is to stay on the sofa as much as I can. I'm glad I have the internet - looking for cool seal facts, quirky Quakers, prehistoric archaeological sites accessible by public transport, and other special interest related content. 😄

'In holding a space for the seeker, the pilgrim & the doubter, Quakers seek to safeguard the sources of prophecy...In opening...our hearts to new light, we attempt to mirror the words of our Teacher: “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also...” (John 10:16).

Internalized ableism deeply impacts late-diagnosed autistic adults, who often spend years in a world that overlooks their needs. This can lead to self-criticism, as societal ideals of "normalcy" and "productivity" become ingrained, making self-acceptance a challenging journey.

Dear friends: if you only want to reskeet images with alt text, please check what it actually says. It's been a big day in useless quips and "a reddit post".

More early Quaker rebel women...

We can accept the grey surface of things. We can swallow the justifications of those who see the world as a Giant Machine. We can become machines ourselves. Or we can allow love and beauty, truth and compassion, to root and guide us. This is what the medicine of Quaker worship helps me to do.

Autistic unmasking isn’t just personal - it’s spiritual. It's dveikut. It’s a return to the self we were before the world told us to hide. It’s teshuvah - not repentance, but coming home. Unmasking is sacred work. A path back to truth, to connection, to the Divine.

I use Audible (sorry) because I can't read in the traditional sense - can anyone recommend some listening material? I want contemporary or historical theological stuff

Get in the habit of bringing up accessibility at meetings, in stand-ups, and in demos. Bring up things you've done to address accessibility. Likewise, don't be afraid to ask, "Have we tested this on a keyboard?" or "What's the experience like on a screen reader?"

Seeking rebel histories among early Quaker women - who would you suggest?

Quakers are getting loads of mentions again, for a really great reason, but it means another wave of "Quakers can do no wrong" and lots of inaccurate history. Part of being a Quaker is learning to resist being intoxicated by this kind of praise.

Today is publication day! If you're curious about how and why Quakers speak during mainly silent worship, this book might help. You can order the book online (links in next post) and sign up for the online launch event with @woodbrooke.bsky.social below.

Check out my latest "Pause for Thought" on what to do "when the pressure's on." Unsurprisingly for a Quaker, I recommend some prayerful quiet. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... #quaker #spirituality #theology @quaker.org.uk

BlueSky tip: enable the "require alt text" option in your accessibility settings (first picture). It will remind you to add alt text describing your image before you post (second picture) and then I (and others who aim to only repost things with alt text) will be more likely to share your posts.
