“Truth doth flourish as the rose, and the lilies do grow among the thorns…”—early Quaker, George Fox, offered this comfort during a time he described as a “thick night of Darkness that may be felt”. No one seeks out the thick night of darkness, but when it comes the light shines out brighter.

🚨 Out now! The new issue of Quaker Studies is a special issue on George Fox, with research articles on his legacy, including the George Richardson Lecture on Fox and the early Quaker movement, book reviews, and more: quakerstudies.openlibhums.org/issue/1329/i...

Excited to announce that my book is out, earlier than scheduled. This was so much fun to write, given my lifelong interest in reading. The spirituality of reading. Reading for spiritual growth.

Quakerism respects diverse views, but a common question is, "What do Quakers believe about the Bible?" Here @petersontoscano.bsky.social @markdruss.bsky.social @rhiannonbookgeek.bsky.social and Timothy Ashworth share "A Quaker Take on the Bible" as British Quakers www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAl4...

This week my employer of 17 years English Heritage announced 200 jobs lost, and my Alma mater Cardiff Uni announced 400 jobs lost. The planning system that protects our heritage and provides thousands of archaeology jobs is at risk, and Higher Education is in free fall more generally #ThisIsFine

Wonderful learning opportunities this year from the amazing resource that is @woodbrooke.bsky.social Highly recommended!

Yup. Microsoft automatically switched me to the $99.99/year version with Spicy Autocomplete. You have to go all the way through "cancel subscription" to be presented these options and get the $69.99/year one you actually chose.

Not just ok, but essential. Snatching happiness from despair is essential, and it's how we find the will to build strength.

Unsolicited writing advice, #17171617: Don't just write. Read books. Watch films. Look at paintings and sculpture. Play games. Go to plays. Listen to music. Think about how these things make you feel. Making art is a two-way stream. To make art, you have to consume art.

I'm looking forward to co-hosting this exciting course on Star Wars and Quakers with @rhiannonbookgeek.bsky.social

Wow, the @woodbrooke.bsky.social 2025 programme of courses just oozes excellent, thought-provoking content. I'm particularly loving the question "Are Jedi Quakers?" It's great to see Quaker theological engagement with pop culture. www.woodbrooke.org.uk/courses/are-... #theology #spirituality

The Calanais Standing Stones have an extraordinary cross-shape. They were erected 5,000 years ago. They predate Stonehenge monument, and were an important ritual place for at least 2,000 years. #StandingStoneSunday

Prediction: 2025 will be the start of a major turn in sapphic romance toward speculative fiction (especially romantasy) and, to a lesser extent, historical fiction

Be alert in 2025 for lots more discussions about the problems in universities. 🚨Note the angle! Beware if pieces fail to document or appreciate historic and ongoing systemic harms and cuts. Or if accountability's deflected and solutions avoided by blaming staff and students and ignoring all else

"Stop writing on [topic you are interested in and sometimes get paid to write about] and instead work on [topic which sounds related but isn't actually covered by your research] because it'll make it easier to get a teaching post." Perhaps it would have done. I made no attempt to follow this advice.

Tony Benn proposed five questions to individuals and organisations who hold power of any kind: 1. What power have you got? 2. Where did you get it from? 3. In whose interests do you use it? 4. To whom are you accountable? 5. How do we get rid of you?
