The project is co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).

The grant is meant largely to inspire new #collaborations and foster research across disciplines and geographical borders.

Other work packages will turn to the campus, #anthropological collections, and more intangible heritage. Collectively, we hope to provide #policy recommendations for new ways to deal with the complex history of #colonial university #heritage!

Our goal is to build on exciting efforts by Botanical Gardens across the globe to decolonize their collections and institutions.
We're particularly interested in asking how Botanical Gardens can function not only as educational sites for e.g. botany but also for (colonial) history.

The Utrecht team consists of Gertjan Plets, myself and @mette.bsky.social.
Mette and I will lead a work package on Botanical Gardens, which fosters collaborations with the Herbarium in Suriname and with @m-azzolini.bsky.social of the University of Bologna.

Working across four continents and eight countries, the project studies the colonial histories of botanical gardens, ethnographic collections, university campuses and intangible heritage. We ask how a critical heritage approach and a global approach can help to develop new curatorial practices.

Short summary: starting next year, Utrecht University will lead a team of scholars from across the globe to map historical networks of colonial knowledge production, to reflect on current heritage practices, and to design and develop new museum interventions.
