I find the for native/by native definition of authentic problematic for a few reasons. Instead, I think Florencia Henshaw and @marishawkins.bsky.social (2022, p. 72) provided the most succinct approach re: authenticity: “Any types of materials … that have not been created for a language learner.”

I much prefer to use Gimkit in the context of novels and such to provide richer input than just vocab practice. (Quizlet is my go to for just straight Eng/Sp practice.) You can provide full sentences as true/false, sentence stems with multiple options, or just old fashioned comprehension questions.

To that end, a valuable wrinkle. Agreed! Happy holidays, Steve. Nice to be back in shared space again!

I do find this study an interesting wrinkle in the broader conversation. But, once again, I fear the study design’s patently uncommunicative data collection instrument just results in conclusions that provide validation for those who are seeking it in order to continue to teach…uncommunicatively.

I’ve been reading a lot of Jonathan Haidt’s work lately and I like his use of Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s concept of “antifragility” to describe a unique characteristic of child and adolescent development. www.instagram.com/reel/DAw79Uw...

Interesting to see how things have changed (or not) some 60 years later. I just came across this take from Leon Panetta in 2018: #edusky #langchat #langsky

Proficiency > Culture is the TPRSBooks company motto, I think. I could be mistaken.

A cool study for anyone that works with developing successful readers in students' L2. (Although, I'd venture to say that the findings would transfer to L1.) #edusky Fostering Novice L2 Pleasure Reading: The Role of Comprehension, Text Difficulty, and Enjoyment files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1...

Congrats! AATSP in Panama? What an awesome location for the conference! Worth staying and exploring a bit if you’ve never been.

I have a passport system. Everybody gets one and it gets stamped at my discretion when they do stuff worth celebrating. I thought it would be too elementary when I started it. But I was very wrong. They love it!

I don’t think that’s the “I told you so” flex you think it is. But, whatever. I respect the grind for trying to learn languages as a hobby. Keep doing what you need to do to connect with peoples and places around the world. Whatever your approach, you’re a better neighbor for it.

“The secret is that you have to repeat stuff until it sticks, there’s no way around it.” Lolwut The competing - not to mention empirical - evidence for this kind of claim is just too obvious. #langchat #langsky

Really??! I’m almost a strictly non-fiction reader (to a fault, I admit). And I couldn’t put this book down. So well done.

Interesting! Wonder what it would look like in the US context, especially in light of the certification shortages in languages. #langchat

When iOS recognizes my Philly dialect and stops trying to autocorrect “jawn” to Jaén, I’ll finally rest easy. 🤦‍♂️
