Before people take seriously candidate promises of supporting climate action, they need to ask specifically what action because they might find it’s a weak incremental or backward step. Woodside is climate vandal. NW shelf is carbon bomb. Reject it! #auspol

Also, hilarious that the federal LNP think they can conjure up new Victorian gas reserves by force of bullshit alone. Fucking *where*? There is zero evidence that Victoria has significant untapped gas reserves. It's dipshits all the way down.

It's almost impossible to see how the reputation of this organisation can recover under the present chief executive and chair. Do us all a favour, gentlemen. New:

The @austhistassoc.bsky.social statement on UA's new definition of antisemitism:

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID. This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC. What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.

While we are all advocating for stuff that is not Amazon, I have to shout out @haymarketbooks.org who offer ebooks with most of their treebooks, and it's regular epub. They also have good sales frequently.

“I’m sorry if this decision is misunderstood by the sector” = “I’m not sorry and you don’t know what’s best for you” FRO

On one hand, all lefty boomery types do is talk about News Corp. On the other hand, we still don’t really talk enough about it. Every single prominent act of McCarthyist censorship over the past 15 months in the arts or media has begun with an article in The Australian.

Only the finest management and HR talent can end up spending $1.1 million on lawyers (just their own!) for an issue with a temporary employee who had two days left on her contract. In awe of the skills.

Clive Palmer’s political party “Trumpet of Patriots” has just released its campaign poster.

Terrific from James Curran AFR & Mick Ryan SMH today. - The US cannot be relied on. - We have to face this & establish real defence self-reliance. (Me: AUKUS, a rubbish Morrison thought bubble unwisely embraced by Albo & Marles, can’t survive this.) #auspol

In Sydney on Monday? Retrograde protest legislation will debated in NSW parliament next week. Australian Democracy Network and NSW Council for Civil Liberties are calling a Protect Democracy Protest: Say NO to new anti-protest laws. When: 6-7pm Monday 17 February Where: Sydney Town Hall

Creative Australia ditching Khaled Sabsabi as our representative at the Venice Biennale is an extraordinary denial of artistic freedom by our supposedly leading & independent arts advocate. A week ago Sabsabi said he thought the honour "wouldn’t happen because of who I am.” Turns out he was right.

This is disgusting. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

“Both time and cost won’t allow nuclear to be done on time" AGL is Australia's largest electricity generator. Dutton's risky nuclear proposal risks cost and time blowouts, with no-one but the public left to pick up the bill. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

If you read one thing today, read this: ‘Framing the issue through a human rights lens alone depoliticises the Palestinian struggle, reducing it to isolated violations rather than a systematic campaign of settler colonialism backed by Western imperialism’. www.tni.org/en/article/g...

Thank god for the welfare state! #raisetherate may not just enhance social justice, it might foster world peace! #aukus #auspol

there is something kind of hysterical about watching the global hegemon abandon its global hegemony simply because its current administration thinks the method of that hegemony is too gay

A spine chilling moment from Donald Trump to Michaelia Cash promising strong-man leadership from Dutton. Trump's tariff announcements mean trouble for the global economy and it's the workers and consumers in every country who will pay with job losses and higher prices.

How are all those AUKUS types feeling today? You know the ones who keep saying we (like Canada) are great mates with the US. We can rely on those bonds of friendship to ensure we will get a nuclear sub. They are really quiet for some reason. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Dumped for a second time! Not saying I support the bill because the whole nature positive idea is utter junk, but this is laughable. Who’s running this portfolio?? theconversation.com/politics-wit...

Libs making early electoral hay in Mackellar on the back of Northern Beaches Council's vote to increase rates by ~ 40% over 3 years. The council is controlled by local micro party Your Northern Beaches Team which has strong links to Sophie Scamps & Zali Stegall

I wrote about PRH's acquisition of Text Publishing and my skepticism about the reach of Charters of Independence and such like. And yet again, I express despair at the ALP's reluctance to put their money where their mouth is on funding AU arts and culture. www.crikey.com.au/2025/01/30/t...

a major event in american politics was the Tea Party revolution wiping away the distinction between the inner and outer cults of movement conservatism. there is no longer a variety of conservative which knows that the exoteric doctrines were sold to rubes in support of the esoteric doctrines.

Australian nationalism is so spectacularly lame that the local Nazis march singing ‘waltzing Matilda’.

Last election , a trip in a Tesla figured as a minor prize in the local Teals' fundraiser. Probably not, this time. #auspol

AUKUS will cost $375 billion. That is a crazy amount of money. If the Govt. was to pay $1 million every day, it would take over 1000 years to get $375 billion. Think of all the things that need $1 million: your local school or hospital. The government decided to spend it on nuclear subs instead.

Helpful!

With Trump now assuming charge of the US, it's time for Australia to have a sober reassessment of our part in AUKUS. It's gravely concerning that for so long, successive Australian governments have contracted out so much of Australia’s defence & foreign policy to the US.

Whom amongst us hasn't made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm

I hope this man never so much as goes to the grocery store without someone yelling- Why aren’t you in The Hague? at him

So Peter Dutton now says the Russian Ambassador should be “sent packing” if Australian Oscar Jenkins has been killed. Why didn’t Dutton demand the Israeli Ambassador be “sent packing” after the IDF killed Australian Aid worker Zomi Frankcom?🙄 Coz he’s a Racist flog.
