That's great Dana. Best of luck. I've shared with NRDC's office in Santa Monica as well.

FEMA had been making good progress on updating its national floodplain development standards, but those...um...well, we elected a new President. A RFI that concluded in January 2022 began FEMA's process to revamp these outdated rules. www.nrdc.org/bio/joel-sca...

As SELC's Sarah Edwards points out, lack of standards leads to, "more risky development that is increasing the exposure of the NFIP and leading to these catastrophic loss events."

Another problem with NFIP and private insurance, is they are both often reliant on outdated codes and land use standards. At least for the NFIP, FEMA has a legal obligation to address that, as @nrdc.org and ASFPM raised in their petition for rulemaking in 2021. www.floods.org/news-views/a...

BTW, this statement is in reference to the National Flood Insurance Program, but it's just as true for private insurance.
If you're a state that wants to avoid being in CA/LA/FL-type of crisis, start building insurable, lower-risk properties today.

The first cities and states who will feel the impact of these staff reductions may be those who apply for funding appropriated this past December. FL, NC, TX, CA are among the big recipients who will be waiting. www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...

“The Trump administration will squander billions in taxpayer dollars to rebuild things that are very likely to be washed away again -- not to mention knowingly putting people in harm’s way,” said Chad Berginnis, executive director of the Association of State Floodplain Managers.

“We already know what the cycle of flood-rebuild-repeat looks like. This means that billions of dollars in disaster aid will be wasted and people will be put in harms’ way,” said Rob Moore @nrdc.org

“Wasteful spending is when you’re spending money on repairing something you know is going to get damaged again,” said Chad Berginnis of ASFPM.
If FEMA doesn’t insist on reasonable flood standards, “we literally are wasting taxpayer money.”
