The UK's anti-protest laws pre-legitimise far right authoritarianism. Labour must repeal them now. My column today. www.theguardian.com/global/comme...

Been pretty quiet on social since the grim US clown town has kicked in. I dearly hope others can be energised, but honestly, I think there’s a real danger that people who aren’t idiots or assholes will struggle to find the guile and energy to fight against the idiots and assholes.

Monty, cheering me up this afternoon. He rested his head on my arm while I was working. Such a handsome chap #cats

A constant reminder that even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as they did during the pandemic lockdown from now to 2030, we still wouldn't meet our emission target to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

Labour under Starmer seem to be doing just about everything they can to prepare the ground for fascism in the UK, just as the Democrats did in the US.

I’ve just realised who Elon and DOGE is reminding me of

I’m sure there were dubious USAID outlays, but as well as charity work, it was clearly a black box of all the ways the US exercised its pro-democracy soft power. Trump just gave the keys to an unelected foreign billionaire who is pulling its contents out to cheering fans & frittering away that power

Enough news. Heading for the South Downs.

Without downloading any new pictures, where are you mentally?

Your 'moment of doom' for Feb. 4, 2025 ~ For whom the doom tolls. "This will probably be the first landscape that disappears because of human activities, indicating yet again how powerful we humans have become in shaping the face of our planet.” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. - George Orwell, 1984 #climate www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

A brave and urgent column by the Labour MP Clive Lewis - @labourlewis.bsky.social - calling on his own party to stop appeasing capital and work on behalf of people and the living world. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Wake up!

Worth a watch and share this. Great job bringing some of these hard themes (the small nature impacts, the economic dogma causes & the futility of many “solutions”to a mainstream audience @adamwelz.bsky.social 👏🏼 youtu.be/hcHJ2pkuDSc?...

A little HAL 9000 but it’s an interesting take from Deepseek.

I can’t get over Misty’s tail. In the space of a few weeks it has gone from little stumpy kitten wand to this magnificent tiger floof #cats

Fixed it

“Under these conditions anything resembling democratic deliberation seems not only impossible but increasingly absurd, like trying to meditate in a strip club.” A good read this, to help understand this strange & dangerous time. www.theguardian.com/news/2025/ja...

Interesting thread on the Deepseek AI story The big (good?) news being that the US approach to rapid scaling (with all its externalities of hastening environmental collapse) has now found to be flawed The bad news is that good ol’ Jevons Paradox will kick in (Efficiency⬆️ = Use ⬆️) & still screw us

This is a sobering read. Like many pet owner, I use the spot on flea treatments for my cats and dog. However, I never joined the dots to think that it would have such a devastating effect on our wildlife. My vet encourages treating for fleas even when they are not present, like many other vets /1

Elon is right when he said “this was a fork in the road of human civilisation” It really was. One route, was collapse but with compassion & global collaboration. The other, was brief bounty for billionaires, followed by even faster and harder collapse & without compassion. The US chose the latter.

This probably fine right? “A third of the Arctic’s tundra, forests and wetlands have become a source of carbon emissions, a new study has found, as global heating ends thousands of years of carbon storage in parts of the frozen north” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Just making sure that everyone is aware of this crab that NOAA scientists found

3M has already been ordered to pay upwards of $10B in the US for cleanup, but it can never be enough. When you look at the PFAS contamination map of Europe it’s staggering to see the scope… like omfg www.lemonde.fr/en/les-decod... #pollution #environment 🌎

Your periodic reminder that no part of the climate emergency was inevitable. It is simply a product of rich men in powerful positions being greedy and throwing the rest of us and the entire living world under the bus in the process. It's really that simple. We have the right to be angry.

Global heating is reducing photosynthesis in tropical trees. "This combination of physiological responses to leaf warming in mature tropical trees may suggest a reduced carbon sink with future warming in tropical forests" Link below.

“economic predictions, which estimate that damages from global heating would be as low as 2% of global economic production for a 3C rise in global average surface temperature, were inaccurate and were blinding political leaders to the risks of their policies” YUP www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Something nice about the structure of this post. Feel like it ought to be turned to a different topic. Do you feed humans? Do you feed humans with misinformation downplaying climate breakdown or other ecological crises? Did you know you might be dangerously altering the fate of all life on earth?

Not that we really need more ways to show how unusually warm 2024 was... Here's the joyplot updated with the past year.
