And so concludes this short and relaxing formation #paleostream! The Soom Shale is a late Ordovician lagerstätte with few fossils but often times exceptional preservation.

A ton of new hunters will be joining the hunt once Wilds comes out, I was considering making a video about the slang terms people use. Luckily someone already did it first! and I think it's worth a watch (as well as the followups) to get an easy intro youtube.com/watch?v=zZ7g...

Sturgeon's Gun and Sturgeon's Razor are "90% of guns are crud" and "90% of razors are crud," respectively. But 100% of cats are the best cat in the whole wide world. I'm not sure exactly how this works; it must be some obscure result in quantum physics. I'll ask Schrödinger.

Another dataset I like is from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, which has maps of the US that show we fixed the acid rain problem by implementing stricter emission controls on power plants. nadp.slh.wisc.edu/maps-data/nt...

Goosebump producing news this week out of Oregon Health and Science University in the diagnosis of pancreatic CA. They developed a groundbreaking blood test, called PAC-MANN. This new test can find pancreatic cancer in just 45 minutes, even in its earliest stages.

Today's extract from Serving the Reich. What makes it worse is that I don't even need to add any explanatory comment, do I?

Your weather app gets its info because of NOAA. Your mail arrives at your home because of USPS. Your plane navigates the skies because of the FAA. Your food is safer -- and we get alerts when it isn't -- because of USDA. You hear about earthquakes *worldwide* because of USGS.

Something that I don't think is discussed enough in #paleontology circles is just how much parental investment is seen in #hadrosaurs. Cause, like, they're doing quite a lot of work compared to what is typical of all other #archosaurs. #Dinosaurs #Maiasaura

A friend of mine from Badlands National Park just lost her position due to indiscriminant firing. Watch if you can! youtu.be/E1ykyUpvCDY?...

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Fresh out of the oven, some new #paleoart for #FossilFriday: mother Coelodonta antiquitatis hurries along her offspring, Bort, who spent too long looking for a personalised novelty licence plate on the mammoth steppe. "Come along, Bort!", she says. #fossil #Iceage #paleontology

How do you measure what isn't there? Elska did a fantastic job leading this paper on how we can measure the volume of changing, 3D spaces inside XROMM skeletal animations. And, importantly, how good are those volume measurements? journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...

I’m proud of our governor for standing up for our youth. This is a crisis. We have to fight for what’s right, every step, every breath, every minute. Thank you, Gov. Mills.

Fun fact: the USPS delivers to every address in the US. PO Box for someone with unstable housing? ✔️ Tiny post office on an island in the Bering Sea? ✔️ Big ass ranch in the middle of nowhere OK where the mailbox is a mile from the house? ✔️ FedEx, UPS, etc...aren't required to cover these!

As if things weren’t bad, some politicians in the US are proposing culling of seals and sea lions to protect salmon fisheries. This is NOT a scientific evidence-based solution. Join and raise your voice against this nonsense #PinnipedFacts

ACTION ALERT: Salish Sea harbor seals & sea lions need your help! *We must take action by 02/21!* Swipe to learn why HJM 4004 is ill-advised + how you can stand up to protect our beloved pinnipeds! #marinemammals #marmam app.leg.wa.gov/csi/Testifie...

This just came up so for anyone who doesn't know - .AI files are *a vector file type*, they are Adobe Illustrator's native file type. Files ending with .ai don't have anything to do with /that/ kind of AI 🫶 Pls don't call out an artist bc you see them working on an .ai file

Of course many federal workers can just “find another job”. But the point is that the jobs we do are done for the *public good*. There are no private sector corollaries. We do things that are largely not profitable and that is on purpose. We do work that benefits everyone, if sometimes indirectly.

Funny story: I woke up this morning to find that our recent ground sloth thermal energetics paper was accidentally cited by a paper on vehicle classification.....kind of taking the "metabolic mileage" thing a little too literally there.

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

Why has life expectancy risen so much over the last 50 yrs? How did we vanquish illnesses that once killed millions? Where did computers and cell phones come from? It's science, and a society that funds & values it. This campaign of vandalism will only doom us, our future & our children's future.

Sooo many baby Irvingtonian Mammut. This was not your typical "fissure". Piled high with mastodons... (Port Kennedy Cave, PA)

Fellow Mammalogists. As many of you are aware, science is in a state of turmoil in the United States. Recent efforts to drastically reduce government workforces and research funding for science will lead to many adverse consequences for Earth’s remaining natural ecosystems.

Measles high infection rate is the reason we have not yet been able to eradicate it. That rate means you need a very high vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks. It is possible, but not with current levels of institutional distrust.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The horror is over, Green River, specifically the Fossil Butte member is done! The Dawn over Eocene fossil lake reveals WAY too many organisms. #paleoart #sciart #paleostream

Or: "Ecologists discover palaeontology (and historicity of biology) 200 years after Cuvier" nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Remember my words: this is just a tip of the iceberg of rebuilding of the ecological theory through its integration with palaeontology 🧪 #Macroecology

Gronckle and deadly nadder

Most people in the US have no idea about the attacks on federally funded science or our government institutions. Many (or most!) of your family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends have no idea. My own MAGA dad thinks DOGE is just identifying waste, and that nothing has been cut. We have to tell them.

“In geology or paleontology, you are shown what is in the earth, and it's amazing when you go back millions of years and you can find a fossil, hold it in your hand, and say, ‘This thing was living millions of years ago, and you're holding the remains of it in your hand to study…’.” Purnell
