That's 2024 Selke candidate Auston Matthews who apparently forgot to cover the best player of his generation. Never change Auston...never change.

Told ya it wouldn’t matter Andrew lol!

Still hasn’t won anything Jack! Lol. Great win!!!
comment in response to post
He plays like this against USA next game and we win in a walk. No one has answer for that.
comment in response to post
Do they have a great goaltender though? He’s never won anything in his career. Like not even junior level from what I can see. Looked human to me last night.
comment in response to post
McDonaugh was taken at 12 overall so you’re making my point for me. You don’t draft that guy at 5. They’re available at lower spots or for trade/UFA.
comment in response to post
I agree and we’ll be underwhelmed for the entire time he plays for the team I bet. We should be swinging for more than a bigger Alex Carrier at 5OA. It’s the equivalent of picking a guaranteed 40-50 pt forward at 5OA. Makes no sense to me with Leonard there (excluding Michkov of course).
comment in response to post
Regarding Reinbacher, I would agree with Brian’s take here. If this is what we get with a fifth overall pick, it’s a clear failure.
comment in response to post
Won’t matter. Over 82 games you might be right. This is too short of a tourney. The main guys will be the difference as we saw last night with Sid. The Americans have no one that can/will take control of a game like that. We have 3 forwards and a defensive that alone can just win the game for you.
comment in response to post
I don’t agree Andrew. We have the best 4 players in the tourney in McDavid, Crosby, McKinnon, Makar. Sorry I dont think Matthews, Hughes and the Tkachuk brothers stack up.
comment in response to post
Jury is still out for me. Slaf is far from a slam dunk, Mesar pick was brutal and don’t get me started on 5OA in 2023. He has work to do on the player procurement side of things for us to be a true contender. This was Bergevin’s weak spot…we’ll see how Kent does.

It’s gonna take Caufield going the other way Brian. That’s a tough sell to the fans and creates another hole on 1st line.
comment in response to post
Yep. Apparently Hughes already spoke with him as well. I would imagine they’re not thrilled with his season either.
comment in response to post
Yeah that’s not very reassuring. Byfield isn’t good either lol.
comment in response to post
I can’t argue with any of that. You’re right of course. But Cooley, and now even Wright, are looking more impactful. If we’re having the same conversation at Xmas next year, we’re in real trouble with this guy.
comment in response to post
Brian what’s your take on Slaf? I’m officially worried. He looks terrible and he’s entering year 4. I don’t care that he’s almost close to last years pt output. It’s more how he looks - lost, lazy, and ineffective.
comment in response to post
Definitely agree about Hage vs Reinbacher. I think the defenders of the 2023 draft are going to realize that despite all the other good moves, mgmt really missed on that pick. I don’t even care about Michkov anymore. What about passing on Leonard?!?!?
comment in response to post
I screamed that they should’ve picked Michkov. But he never showed the same level of dominance in 1v1 situations as Demidov. This is more translatable to the NHL than just breakaways and tap-ins. Can’t wait to see him here.
comment in response to post
Skeptical. I saw 4 games in his D+1 that were shockingly bad. He seemed to look better when he came to Laval. Hope I’m wrong.
comment in response to post
He’s going to work out fine. We don’t need him to put up 100 pts. If he’s a Rick Nash type that’s an excellent use of a 1OA pick. Most teams don’t have a player like that.
comment in response to post
Ok Brian I’ll put you on the spot - over/under 70 pts next year? I’m taking the over and I can’t believe this guy is going to play for us for the next decade!
comment in response to post
I don’t think people are aware yet of what Demidov is actually going to bring. We’ve never had a player like this at the forward position in my lifetime. Fun times ahead!
comment in response to post
Typical Matthews game - invisible until Marner puts one on a tee for him. This game has been defined by one sided reffing, bad MTL goaltending, and bad luck for Habs. Score isn’t indicative of the play for me.

“Guy whose team is a national joke says his team has 4 better players than -insert random team-. Next on Sportscentre”.
comment in response to post
Minimum 60 points next year and I’m probably being way too conservative with that projection. We’ve never had a player like this before. It’s kinda hard to believe he is this good but the reality is, he is going to be an absolute superstar.
comment in response to post
He’s not a very good skater. I don’t see his game translating to being a game changer in the NHL. Also, can’t deliver when it matters most apparently.
comment in response to post
Nailed it on Evans, Brian. Getting him locked in for ~$3.5M for 4 yrs could work provided he’s a 3C to start and is moved back down to 4C when Beck pops. If Dach continues this trend, we just need a 1RD. I’m skeptical that’s in the system now but we should be able to acquire via trade or F agent.
comment in response to post
I think at this point he’s gonna fetch a first rounder. And if that’s the case, I think we have to trade him. I can’t see him taking anything less than $4M per year now.
comment in response to post
Looks strong. And I love the soft spot he found to make himself available for the one timer.
comment in response to post
Yeah I don’t think I would expect any of those 3 players to be sure things either. I think the trade for Dach was fine. It’s unfortunate how it’s played out and I hope he can put it together next season.
comment in response to post
You think Vancouver would be ok with how Dach looks post injury?
comment in response to post
If Dach was somewhat close to his 2023 self, it’s not a terrible offer. No chance now that he’s a non factor.
comment in response to post
Oh you’re coming from Van’s viewpoint. Ya you’re prob right.
comment in response to post
Just curious why? Petterson still young and fits our timeline. Imagine Demidov/Petterson/Laine playing on the same line.
comment in response to post
With Dach playing like a ghost, I don’t think we have the pieces anymore. If he was a functional 2C I would do something like Dach + our 1st rounder this year + Matheson.
comment in response to post
We’ll know well before 3 yrs. We knew KK stunk in his D+2 for example. Reinbacher likely is going to have a similar season to Dach in Laval next year. You think he’ll just magically elevate to a top pair guy by 2026-27? The odds of this pick being a dud are high.
comment in response to post
I believe he was injured at the start of his D+1 which is what some blamed his poor season on. Also, in his draft year I think there was another knee injury if I remember correctly.
comment in response to post
You're right of course. It's possible they couldn't move up. It's just that the 2023 draft really shook my confidence about mgmt. I liked pretty much everything they did before that draft. I remember that evening feeling so disappointed. From then on, my trust level is basically at zero.
comment in response to post
To clarify, I said if they can't win a cup in the next 5 seasons - yes, they need to go. That would be 8 or 9 seasons with them in charge.
comment in response to post
He can't stay healthy though. He's been injured the last 3 seasons. Not sure why his durability wasn't a concern for our mgmt team.
comment in response to post
I think Reinbacher being a top pair guy now is far less likely due to injury. You need high upside when you pick at 5. I think our team choked at the draft and played it safe. Agreed on 31 and 37 but why not package and move up? Musty, Cowan, Ritchie all might have higher upside than Newhook.
comment in response to post
We had picks 5, 31 and 37. We got a 2nd pair D and Newhook. Fowler looks great now but Primeau had save %s of 931 and 933 in his two years in NCAA. How does he look now? Considering Bogdan said Habs don't even talk to him, he might not ever come over to North America. End result aint great.
comment in response to post
I won't be happy unless we win a Cup in the next 5 years. Short of that, mgmt needs to go.
comment in response to post
Michkov was the best player available. I don't buy it 100%, but let's assume he wouldn't come to MTL. I think Leonard is going to have more of an impact in the league than Reinbacher. OR you accept the NSH trade offer of Askarov and the 17th pick (and pick Sandin-Pellika). Both options are better.
comment in response to post
Again, if you think that the 2023 draft was a success, that is on you.
comment in response to post
LOL. I would encourage you to watch the Daigle documentary on Amazon Prime. You're just flat out wrong on that one. Reinbacher hasn't looked good since we made the pick so I don't think 10 years worth of data is necessary here. Saying we need to wait until late career is pretty silly.
comment in response to post
You think getting a 2nd pair D at 5 overall is a good result? Sorry but I think we should have higher expectations.
