‘I was seven in 1975 when I committed myself to Leeds United, then I watched a great team fall apart’ www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer...

"Please can we stop treating this as a political football or way of scoring points against each other." Gillian Tett, Financial Times columnist, calls for people to use "empathy" and "tolerance" on the gender debate. #Newsnight

In 2015, the GRA was so uncontroversial that I watched beacon of progress, Willie O’Dea, give a speech in the Dáil saying he didn’t think it went far enough

Beautiful data-art on the cover of the European State of the Climate Report released today. The mountainscape shows changes in European temperatures since 1940. Designed by @annalombardi.bsky.social. #esotc Full report: climate.copernicus.eu/esotc/2024

Biggest commitment to a 3 second joke I've ever seen

Great news on 2040 in the #German coalition treaty! They support a net 90% target at EU level with the following conditions: - max 3% of high quality Article 6 credits can be used, - Germany's domestic 2040 target (88% 'gros') won't increase, - permanent (!) and sust. removals.

Please STOP THIS NONSENSE folks! Mischaracterizing the science is wrong regardless of what side of the climate policy debate you may be on: michaelmann.net/on-the-new-w...

It's amazing how few people in the UK realise that the last time the world went in to a massive financial tailspin, albeit one not directly caused by the President of the USA, it was Gordon Brown & the late Alistair Darling who provided the sort of international leadership desperately needed now.

We elected a man everyone who matters in this country knew was an idiot. The bulk of them refused to say so openly and directly — either because they thought he could do something for them or because there are political and journalistic norms against speaking that way.

I see "nobody" is using the cycle path again along North Strand Road on the Clontarf Route:

I'm back to work today after several days of literal fever dream only to find myself in the metaphorical variety 🫠 Anyway, we asked a bunch of experts what Trump tariffs might mean for global energy flows and climate action www.carbonbrief.org/...

I’ve taken the Senate floor and will speak for as long as I’m physically able to lift the voices of Americans who are being harmed and not being heard in this moment of crisis. Watch here:

The former ambassador to Denmark for the United States, Rufus Gifford, posted this video on his Facebook account: Ht: @hpsc24.bsky.social

The New York Times is in denial about its own role in 2024.

Happy St Patrick's Day 💚 Celebrating our amazing landscape with this image of a bumblebee taken at Gortlecka/Inchiquin, Co Clare. This vital microcosm of Burren vegetation is one of the locations supported for conservation by An Taisce www.antaisce.org/gortlecka-to...

South Korea battles worst ever wildfires as disaster chief points to ‘harsh reality’ of climate crisis

A reminder that the Dictionary of Irish Biography has just completed four years on open access at dib.ie 11,000+ lives are waiting for you. Each one written by an expert in their field. Initially paywalled, now free courtesy of government support.

Happy #StPatricksDay #OnThisDay 1835 there was ‘a very large attendance’ of MPs in the Commons, including the leading Irish MP Daniel O’Connell ‘wearing a large bunch of shamrock’. For more on some of the Irish MPs we've researched for our project, see victoriancommons.wordpress.com/category/ire...

The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy. Nonetheless, holy shit. What’s remarkable is that there’s hardly any real news driving this. It’s just investors belatedly realizing that Trump is who he is, and always was.

Trump was handed an awesome economy. He was handed the best, by far, post-Covid economy of ANY industrialized nation. He was handed an economy with employment way up, consumer spending way up, the markets way up, & inflation way down. And in only 7 weeks, he’s fucking it all up.

FUN FACT.

"Wolf packs have become a real danger, especially for livestock." Fatal wolf attacks in Europe are so rare its hard to even find reliable records. Horse and Pony related deaths account for ~20-50 deaths per year across the EU. But when Wolves kill Ursula's pony they are a real danger.

Having studied democratic and rule of law backsliding for quite some time, one of the recurrent features I have encountered at start of process is a misplaced faith in one’s country’s resilience + a misplaced sense of “they can’t do this so they won’t”

Just so brazen - now let’s have some names

TODAY: Europe’s Largest Battery Storage Site Goes Live at Blackhillock, Scotland. Europe’s largest battery storage facility now officially operational - major milestone in the UK’s push for a net-zero power grid by 2030. It has a capacity of 600MWh – enough to power 3.1 million homes for 2 hours.

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

🚨 BREAKING: After torpedoing yesterday’s meeting with Zelensky, JD Vance fled to Vermont for vacation—only to be met by hundreds of furious protesters. Couldn’t have happened to a better guy!

UK PM Starmer to Zelensky: "You are very, very welcome here in Downing Street. As you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom. We will stand with you and Ukraine for as long as it may take."

Former Conservative MP and British Attorney General Dominic Grieve:

Woke up thinking about Zelensky being asked “Why don’t you wear a suit?” yesterday and remembered the time Winston Churchill also did not wear a suit visiting the White House during an active war.

If you look at the catastrophe unfolding and one of your reactions is to gloat to me or attack Starmer, let me save you time. The fact that the Zelenskyy meeting went horribly wrong, does not invalidate every effort to give it every chance to go right. It was a long shot and still worth taking. 1/2

No, the meeting did not go badly for Ukraine. It exposed in the most undeniable, unequivocal way possible the pro-Putin commitments of the president and vice president. That was information Americans and allies needed to have clear before them.

From the political frying pan into the fire... to sink more investment resources in fossil fuel emissions, as we converge on energy usage limits towards 2030, 2040? Climate experts warn Government against move to import LNG fossil fuels from (Trump's) US. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...
