With our average electricity demand being 30GW that means all planned storage would only provide 4 hours worth of electricity for the country. We need at least a full weeks worth. Can't get rid of anyyy fossil fuel backups

I mean, its early days. Also long duration energy storage or things like advanced geothermal, tidal turbines, are still developing and gaining economies of scale, so gas will have to fill the void in the short term. we have technology its just expensive. that will change.

Fantastic to see. Interested in their cold weather performance - my batteries work perfectly until it's below zero in the garage and then both charge and discharge speeds are markedly reduced.

As with the batteries my EV, these grid scale storage batteries are in heated and cooled units. I also have LFP batteries in my home, they have seed tray heaters in-between each set, so I can warm them up if necessary.

I've thought about that and decided that the cost to heat mine on the few days when it drops low enough to affect their performance isn't worth it. But it would be for batteries outdoors, and in Scotland, I should think.

Might have been cheaper and more cost effective to put them in a giant warehouse that you can open the sides on in summer. But they'll have thought of that, I assume.

It may have been, but usually these batteries need to lose heat, as a lot of heat is generated charging and discharging them, so outdoors it is, even though that seems crazy in winter.

Might be in the UK, but the current largest one I could find is in California at 3,000MWh. BYD are apparently planning one that will be 12,500 MWh!
