This news truly breaks my heart. We are calling on HHS to take immediate action. Secretary Kennedy needs to bring back weekly measles tracking from the CDC, rehire the health experts, and roll out a serious vaccine campaign. Our kids' safety is on the line! abcnews.go.com/Health/1st-m...

The American Sociological Association joins the American Federation of Teachers in filing suit over the Dear Colleague letter. democracyforward.org/wp-content/u...

💯🤌🏾 This thread.⬇️ Such an important and on point take!

I write this from Newark airport, as my thinking on the administration’s actions moves from “they are going to inadvertently get someone killed” to “they are going to get someone killed intentionally.”

Journalists should report the truth the way this judge laid it out.

The most shocking thing about this is that anyone took him at his word.

Since federal health information is getting harder to come by, I thought I'd share this new resource. Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine launched an online Avian Flu Resource Center--a one-stop clearinghouse for trustworthy information on bird flu. www.vet.cornell.edu/highly-patho...

Kudos to the school administrator who wrote this letter for making it clear to families what happened and who they should blame. This is the way to build a coalition--with a shared adversary and a reason to fight.

Congratulations to one of our awesome Ph.D. students, Katie Furl, on starting an Assistant Professor of Sociology position at the Univ of North Dakota this fall! 🎉

International students aren't typically eligible for financial aid. Which means that even if they make up a small share of students (~10% at most big state schools; more than that at many private schools), they generate a much bigger share of tuition revenue. Which makes losing them a serious risk.

I don't remember having a single BIPOC instructor the whole time I was at community college. Not one.

In my entire undergraduate college career, spanning decades, I had *one* Black professor. In four colleges. Private and public. In New York City! Got B.A. in 2015. (I didn't finish the first time and went back as an old.)

💯 I had two students come up to me after the first class this semester to tell me how excited they were to "finally have a Black professor!" In the past, I have had seniors say they took my class to ensure they would have a Black professor before they graduated.

🤯🤬😥😮‍💨 "While the decision [i.e. Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard] applied specifically to admissions, the Trump admin believes it extends to all race-conscious spending, activities & programming at colleges." #AcademicSky #Policy #Education #Sociology

The Department of Education is too small for a label.

Sending love to everyone on this V'Day! 💕 We definitely could use a LOT more love instead of all the power grabs these days, but I digress. I got this sweet LEGO set of the famous LOVE image. We lived in Philly, which has LOVE sculptures, so it's especially meaningful for my fam to work on this. 🥰

You might have missed it, but Amazon warehouse workers in Raleigh, NC are voting this week on whether to form a union. If they win, they'll be the first unionized Amazon facility in the South. Remember that we can always find hope in the labor movement.

The National Parks Service has removed Trans folks from the Stonewall National Monument, the riot they led. Fight for Trans people like they have always fought for everyone else. Trans folks, you are loved, valued, and a vital part of our world. You can't erase Trans people. We won't let you.

I'm working on a couple of upcoming talks and can't get over how simply describing what is happening right now with attacks on the NSF, NIH, Diversity, etc. makes me sound like a raving lunatic. They've launched an all-out assault on empirical reality.

😢

History folks, a friend asked me: "Do you have any history professor friends that could recommend textbooks for middle/high school students that provide the accurate history of America and/or the world? I wasn't expecting to wake up today and learn that now I have to be a historian." 😥 Any recs?

Oh my god. They removed "transgender" from the page about Trans woman Sylvia Rivera's page at the National Park service. "Sylvia Rivera began fighting for gay and _____ rights" WOW.

Check out this great, informative piece by @shelleydclark.bsky.social & @ruraldemography.bsky.social highlighting rural/urban marriage patterns that challenge sterotypical views on marriage and family life. wapo.st/42SavfP

🚨🚨🚨 Hot off the press! Shelley Clark and I wrote an Op-Ed in the Washington Post that’s out this morning about declining Marriage rates in rural America (and the potentially “misaligned” policy implications that go along with it). Would love to hear your thoughts!

The ASL version of “Not Like Us” is magnificent.

Here are some facts about "facilities and administrative" (F&A) costs, what we in the business call "indirects" and what Musk is calling "overhead" as he tries to convince Americans with being ok with cutting billions on dollars from medical and public health research at universities & hospitals 1/

This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

Rather telling, indeed. Not to mention Lousiana has one of the highest proportions of Black residents among all U.S. states!

This is a timely and critical reminder that our work and scholarship are still important and necessary. So, for those of us who are actually still able to do our research, please do (and take necessary breaks, of course). Also, thank y'all for keeping on keeping on! 🙏🏾 💪🏾❤️

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

Just learned from NPR that the federal government is the largest employer in the great Kansas City area, for example. I found it helpful to be reminded that, of course, this isn’t just about people who work and live in DC. Federal employees are in all of our communities.

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job

So MANY gov't webpages have been removed, temporarily or permanently. Disturbing to see. Even more disturbing is knowing this is our reality. Check out this WaPo sample of sites that have disappeared. "Not even NASA was spared." I cringe at the thought that there are/will be more... wapo.st/4hPMU3A

This. ⬇️ As if the assault on social science research isn't horrible enough. There are many ramifications for critical medical research as well. So many of us will be impacted... either directly or indirectly.
