None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

Angie Stone was one of the great soul singers of her generation. An incredible vocalist and artist. Rest well, Queen. Thank you for the music. 🕊️💙

this was SO much fun to put together. it’s a mixture of films you probably know and some deep cut gems that you should!!

🗣Spring has come, and winter's gone, my love.... RIP Angie Stone 💙🕊

New jazz fellowship honors the genre’s elders and gives them each an unrestricted $100,000 grant thegrio.com/2025/02/27/n...

RIP Gene Hackman - One of the most influential screen actors ever. There was nothing he couldn’t do. His work was searingly truthful and often brutally honest -he never let you off the hook . Not afraid of ambiguity- a lost quality these days . Lucky & grateful to have share screen with him.

What a loss. He left us with so many wonderful performances. RIP

I wasn't gonna say post anything about Rolling Stone listing MJ's "The Lady in My Life" on its list of 50 Terrible Songs on Great Albums. But this speaks to a bigger issue - what happens when white mainstream media outlets dare to speak about Black music & culture. open.substack.com/pub/headphon...

Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning soul and R&B vocalist and educator who penned massive hits with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” has died at age 88. Read the free obituary here: www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...

It's been a couple weeks since I've seen HARD TRUTHS and yet I still can't stop thinking about Marianne Jean-Baptiste's performance.

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Nearly every problem in your screenwriting can be solved by two questions: 1. What story are you telling? 2. What emotion are you trying to evoke? Your job gets much easier when you let these central values guide your decision-making. #scriptsky

Everyone from Elvis to Bruce Springsteen has covered this song. And they've created some solid renditions but nothing will ever quite capture the magic of the original. Rest In Peace, Jerry Butler --

Sadden to hear of Gwen McCrae's passing a couple days ago. I will always remember her great music. This is one of my favorites:

Remembering Nina Simone on her birthday (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003)💙🕊️ "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" (Montreux 1976)

"The Disappearance of Miss Scott" reacquaints viewers with a jazz virtuoso who was the first Black person to have a TV show and was almost erased by the government.

RIP to one of the greatest singers of soul 🙏🏾
