The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.

Today was a grim, terrible day for the United States and the cause of democracy. Putin, along with other dictators around the world, can finally look at Trump with confidence and think: one of us. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Jim Acosta: I think the AP should consider whether or not to sue the administration… and the rest of the press corps should start seriously considering whether it’s worth sending everyone into the Oval Office, onto Air Force One, or into the briefing room.

As a journalist who covers extremism at the local level, I think it’s a mistake to view Trump’s Napoleonic statement as solely about presidential power. Consider if it’s interpreted as a wink and a nod for any extremist to act outside the law to “save” the country as they see fit

@radiofreetom.bsky.social reacts to how President Trump is seriously thinking about making Canada a U.S. state "What kind of president sits around, having these kind of thoughts, especially when there are so many other problems here at home and around the world" #SundayShow

Just last week someone told me Trump would never shut down USAID because it buys so much US grain and I said, "I wonder if he knows that"

Elon Musk is not a Federal employee or a political appointee. DOGE is not a real department. None of their activities are legal. This is a coup. The Republicans in Congress are willing participants in it. At what point do Democrats in DC get that and start acting like it? It’s not the price of eggs!

America (all of us) is about to go through some stuff. As someone who saw a lot of this coming, I’m frustrated and sad. My hope is that when the dust settles we will have a populous that is more engaged in the operation of their government. Perhaps this will be good in the long run.

I think it was the inevitable outcome of millions of people not understanding and not caring how their own government works

I was one of those warning how bad it would be and how Trump 2 would be much worse than anyone complacently assumed. But even I didn’t have ‘cancel all foreign aid, including to kids with HIV & malaria’ and also ‘let the world’s richest man get access to our private data’ on my 2025 bingo card.

Dear Congress, Do your f______ job. R/ America

This is a good point. Franklin famously said that we have a republic “if we can keep it.” Americans have become complacent in keeping it. They have now in fact elected someone who has every intention to take it away.

Trump isn’t acting like someone who is worried about his party winning in two years or four. Might be a bad sign.

From a bored and affluent middle class who wanted another season of reality TV.

The last time people underestimated the authoritarian threat. We're living through the same cycle again.

You were warned

Time to flood the zone, people. Email all of your federal representatives. The only way this gets under control is if Congress starts doing its job.

Accountability is hard. So a 71 year old child who got caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar is begging for a pardon from a man he voted to convict of impeachable offenses. Left is right. Up is down. Whatever as long as I don’t have to go to prison.

So I see we going to try isolationism again. Good times. It’s hard being one of the few people in the room who have read a history book.

How is this not the biggest scandal in America right now? Isn’t this unprecedented?? Maybe Dems in the Senate should take a break from voting to confirm Trump nominees & condemn the guy who said he wanted Pelosi ‘hanged’ on Jan 6th, & also condemn the guy who just released him from prison! Sheesh.

This is how you say “go fuck yourself sideways with a porcupine” in inspector general speak. Going to be interesting to see how the administration responds

Pete Hegseth is the most unqualified nominee for Secretary of Defense in modern history. He should be rejected by the Senate.

This was quite a thrilling read….

Concerning.

Right out of the gate they are detaining U.S. citizens and saying their “papers”are fake. It was always a lie.

The past several days have proven without a shadow of a doubt that Project 2025 is real and underway. And those who warned America about it were right.

Finding out is the hardest part

The “free speech defenders,” ladies and gentlemen.

Sergeant Gonell @sergeantaqgo.bsky.social sent me this picture. This is his call log. Each call is an automated Dept of "Justice" notification saying "The defendant you testified against is being released from the dept of corrections." Each defendant assaulted him.

Sometimes I think Adams was right.

Tarrio's indictment for seditious conspiracy, about as serious a charge of betrayal of country as there is. Can start with para 13-14 to get a sense of whom Trump has chosen to coddle. Might just as well pardon Timothy McVeigh, except he was a lone actor. www.documentcloud.org/documents/22...

Backing the blue while tackling those everyday issues that Americans care about

I’m sure this is meaningless.

Just spoke with former Officer Mike Fanone about the Biden pardon that covers him and other officers who testified before the Jan. 6 committee. “This is a different kind of American exceptionalism. It’s exceptionally fucked up.”

No matter where you fall on the TikTok ban, the President undoing by “executive order” a law passed by Congress and upheld unanimously by the Supreme Court is an unconstitutional abuse of power.

It is President Nixon's position that foreign governments should not have broad access to Americans' private information, or have means to distribute misinformation among Americans that serves their ends. - RZ

Tomorrow a man will raise his right hand and swear to ensure the laws be faithfully executed. Unfortunately, we already know he doesn’t mean it. He will uphold the laws that suit him and ignore the ones that don’t. This is a sad and frustrating time for those of us who respect the rule of law.

Started //// going (Democracy dies in capitalism)

Bravo.

If you know *anything* about operations of federal government, Dunning-Kruger tech bros quoted in this story sound just like: How hard could it be to land a 747? How hard could it be to do surgery on the eyeball? How hard could it be to lead a SEAL team raid? www.nytimes.com/2025/01/12/u...

People watching me get undressed before airport security in any country not named the United States; look at this poor soul.”

My father would womanize, he would start land wars with Denmark. He would make outrageous claims like claiming ownership of Greenland. Sometimes he would refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Since Trump won the election: End the war in Ukraine on day one: not happening Lower prices: pretty tough. Probably not. Cut the federal budget with Musk: nope. Deport all the brown people: sure, unless they are H1B brown people. Probably not many of the other ones either. We are unserious

Yes. Reveals herself to be sane.
