Down for #RAUK25 in Leeds with a poster in tow - 2 amazing days await! #RAsky @ra-uk.org #foldablecargobike

A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. Please repost if you agree 🌳

You may have been coming across the term "Wheeling" recently and wondered what it actually referred to. @wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk has just published a handy explainer, in the first of its new #LanguageMatters series.

Bluebell wood from a bike, including bucolic birdsong

😢 This is the most poignant xkcd ever The times in which we live Future generations will simply not understand (I don’t)

The disturbing reality that’s been imposed on us with no consent & how to resist it.

Ok, this isn't a typical #foxoftheday but it does involve a fox in a very wild environment. This is a Golden Ealge being faced up to by 2 mature stags with a fox creeping by in the top left of the shot. I think it's pretty cool. Morvern, Scotland. @chrisgpackham.bsky.social

Emperor moths are absolutely stunning creatures, so I was most pleased to add this charismatic species to the Upton garden list following a 10 minute lunchtime lure deployment earlier today #TeamMoth @dorsetmoths.bsky.social

Just seen this story about Farage saying men are prepared to make sacrifices in a way that women don’t. Do tell me about all those sacrifices, Nigel. Things like… an extra ~50 mins per day of leisure time on average? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I live on a street where car sharing is becoming the norm. 3 families own cars, & 3 don’t—the ones without borrow from the ones who do. We: 🗣️ Ask in advance 🪙 Chip in for wear and tear ⛽️ Replace the petrol we use It’s great—fewer cars on the street & more active travel. Anyone else do this?

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.
I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

10 years! 🙌 We've been 'active' much longer 😄 but it's 10yrs since our re-launch. 🎉 🚲 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 🧍‍♀️👨‍🦽👩🏾‍🦯🚴🏿‍♂️🏃🏾🚴🏼‍♀️👩🏻‍🦽🧑🏼‍🦯🧍‍♂️ 2025 York must reduce car use, prioritise active & public transport and double cycling to improve our health, environment, and economy. 🚑🧬🌍🐝🐞🦋🌳💰 📣 📣📣📣 🎊👏🍻 🍻 👏🎉 linktr.ee/yorkcycle #ActiveTravel

*Please repost* @sjgreenwood.bsky.social and I just launched a new personalized feed (*please pin*) that we hope will become a "must use" for #academicsky. The feed shows posts about papers filtered by *your* follower network. It's become my default Bluesky experience bsky.app/profile/pape...

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com

I keep thinking about my driver and interpreter when I observed the 2012 Ukrainian election, and all the wonderful polling staff I met. These are real people with hopes and dreams and lives of their own and the world's most powerful man would rather sell US citizenship to oligarchs than help.

NEW: Official advisers CCC say UK shld cut emissions 87% by 2040 ⚖️Net cost of net-zero 73% less than thought 💷Total cost to 2050 = £108bn (~£4bn/yr, 0.2% GDP) 🏡🚗H’hold energy/fuel bills to fall £1,400 🔌Electrification is key THREAD + charts www.carbonbrief.org/... 1/10

LLMs can't take responsibility for their mistakes. When a human journalist puts their name on AI-written text, they take on that responsibility. Increasingly I see inaccurate and badly written news stories authored by AI, many of which have actual humans listed as authors or editors.

Stand with Ukraine and the facts, not the greedy oligarchs spewing easily debunkable fakes 🇺🇦

On a bit of a spur of the moment watched Conclave and really enjoyed it, Ralph Fiennes compelling yet again, one of my favourite actors 📽️

✍️ Do we really need growth (and if so, of what)? Labour’s growth obsession ignores a key truth: we’ve already ‘arrived’ – instead of chasing more, it’s time to share prosperity fairly By Peter Wrigley

I’ve just missed the boat being a first year consultant, but if you’re into #RA and qualify as below, look into applying *deadline end of today* - Resident Anaesthetist ST6+ - Pre-CCT Fellow (ST6+) - Post-CCT Fellow - Undertaking the Portfolio Pathway programme (formerly CESR) #RAsky #RAUK25

That’s how I’d love to be greeted & picked up! 🚲

Great to see the @ra-uk.org app is up & running! Plan A blocks are free for all to browse but consider joining RA-UK for full access to all the content, it’s superb value - especially as #RAUK25 in Leeds is coming up on the 8-9th May. Hope to meet many of you there! Look forward to it!

The irony of the richest man in the world almost single-handedly destroying an agency designed to help the world’s poor, so that the U.S. federal budget has more room for another giant tax cut for the richest man in the world and his pals, should not be lost on anyone. [Cartoon by Mike Luckovich]

Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 why Trump hasn't been impeached yet?

The term ‘heels over head,’ was first recorded circa 1400. The variant ‘head over heels’ began to circulate in the 1600s, and it seems to have occurred through an error.

Must-read. Rewarding Putin for aggression would be an incredibly stupid and dangerous thing to do, almost guaranteeing a later conflict that starts with Russia in a more advantageous position.

The weekly fruit stall at York Hospital is open today! 🍓🍅🥕🍏🍑🥔🌶️ Sheila's Greengrocers will be onsite every Friday, 8am to 2pm, and is open to staff, patients, and visitors to enjoy delicious, fresh, local produce 😋

I keep hearing from healthcare #AI companies that Large Language Models ( #LLMs ) can be made to be "deterministic" as part of arguments around safety. I thought I'd do a little ranty 🧵 to explain why (a) it's not true in the real world, and (b) it's not even the right question. 1/

A Finnish 🇫🇮 study highlights that commuting by bicycle significantly reduces sickness absence among municipal employees. Active cyclists, covering over 30 km weekly, had an 8–18% lower risk of sickness absences and averaged 4.5 fewer sick days annually than passive commuters.

Rachel Reeves holds newts in contempt, it seems. So I thought I'd post this glorious painting of a "lion of the duckweed" by Jackie Morris + my paean to these "kings of the pond", both from The Lost Words. Newt-lovers, unite!

Nature is not a blocker to growth. The UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has claimed that 'The balance has gone too far in the direction of always protecting every bat and every newt.' But how can this statement be true when the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world?🌍

I had an NHS health check this week. I scored low for type 2 diabetes risk. Low cholesterol. Blood pressure at the lower end of normal. Pulse rate low. Stroke and heart disease risk low. 💪 Literally the only cardio exercise I do is walking and cycling as transport. Active travel is a lifesaver! ❤️

🔥 FINALLY! The BBC are finally doing the public education service on Brexit that they always should have. Have a read. 👇👇

Over 1 in 5 people in the UK are in poverty 📢 Our UK Poverty report has found that 14.3 million people are experiencing poverty - 8.1 million are working-age adults - 4.3 million are children - 1.9 million are pensioners 1/9

I am still looking for anyone who would like to contribute a short piece to History and Heritage Yorkshire (around 800-1500 words) on a related subject of their choice. I would especially like to hear from someone overseas about why Yorkshire's past is so interesting to to them. Small museums

“At all ages, increased activity was associated with lower mortality”. Good to read this in the @bmj.com having done an hour’s indoor bike ride with #Zwift this morning. But how do we help everyone to get more active? Not just those who are already taking lots of exercise. #MedSky #PublicHealth
