FFS, the Teamsters represent federal employees. Not many, probably in hundreds or low 1000s, but it’s more than 0

It is ridiculous to blame Turkey for the criminal actions of a not-especially-friendly foreign government that occurred on property that Turkey has no control over and cannot even enter without Saudi permission Turkey does lots of bad things, but this ain’t one of them

The Saudis murdered Khashogi while he was inside the Saudi embassy. Turkey wasn’t involved, and was livid about the murder

This Hyde Amendment relates to awarding attorney fees against the government if it brings criminal charges frivolously or in bad faith

I’d be more worried about personal jurisdiction and sovereign immunity
comment in response to post
Even if there’s some metric by which this is technically true, what an idiotic and tone-deaf thing to say

I don’t think the SDNY has even filed the dismissal motion yet
comment in response to post
Then fine them. $10,000 per violation and $10,000 per day the fine isn’t paid. How many sycophants are going to be willing to bet $12 million that the next administration won’t collect either? (Of course, they’d have to be higher for Musk)
comment in response to post
If you’re talking about Eastland and Hutchinson, they involve the scope of immunity for purportedly legislative acts occurring outside of the legislative chamber Hutchinson states, at multiple points in the decision, that statements made on the floor are absolutely immune from liability
comment in response to post
Is there a court decision that holds that? Because “for ANY Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place,” seems pretty unequivocal
comment in response to post
He may well not even be reading them
comment in response to post
Well, the Gaza Strip is most certainly a place, and the forced relocation of its population would most certainly be a crime against humanity
comment in response to post
Is it possible that Musk could be personally liable for this? He’s a private citizen, so not covered by the Westfall Act or any other official immunity that I’m aware of
comment in response to post
Genuine question: If Musk prevents legally required payments from being processed, could he be personally liable (e.g. for tortious interference with contract)? And since he’s not a government official, wouldn’t the various forms of immunity that might otherwise apply be unavailable?

It’s a profoundly stupid and reckless order, sure, but what makes it illegal?

I think you are seriously overestimating the midwits running the Heritage Foundation these days
comment in response to post
The Heritage Foundation folks aren’t nearly as smart as they think they are, and I think you overestimate their ability to control him The simplest explanation is generally the correct one, & here, the simplest explanation is that Trump is a buffoon who acts on his own intuitions, experts be damned
comment in response to post
TROs generally aren’t appealable. Preliminary injunctions are, though. The purpose of a TRO is basically to give the parties/judge enough time to brief/decide whether a preliminary injunction should be ordered

He fired one of the two Democratic members. The Board is now split 1R-1D Without a quorum of 3, it can’t decide cases

I think we’re all dealing with a lot right now I recognize that being a “well, actually” guy doesn’t help. I’m working on it

I set Bluesky up to require ALT text, and didn’t fee like going into the settings to turn it off

You are talking to a human being, who realizes that he was somewhat obnoxious and regrets it I cannot verify my account for the same reason that I changed my profile. I am concerned about retaliation by the new administration and don’t want to be easily identifiable

Your source complains about the CSG and CRDS. France and the U.S. formally agreed that they were taxes, and therefore offset U.S. tax liabilities, in 2019, and U.S. courts recognized them as such even before that faccnyc.org/pdf/csg_crds...
comment in response to post
Also, any foreign taxes that you pay offset your U.S. tax bill, and since most developed countries have higher taxes, it’s pretty unusual for Americans living abroad to owe U.S. taxes

Tedious

So, so tedious
comment in response to post
This is so fucking tedious
comment in response to post
This is tedious. Go find someone else to deliberately misinterpret
comment in response to post
At no point did I defend him; I objected to the misuse of the term “war crime”
comment in response to post
If you want to have an argument about the Obama presidency, I suggest that find someone interested in doing so
comment in response to post
That’s not what “war criminal” means. A war criminal is someone who commits a serious violation of the law of war

I think it’s more like +85. The last time a Republican cracked 10% was 1988

Not unless he mistook it for his wife’s sister

It is, but self-awaredly so

Better him than Kristi Noem
comment in response to post
Or at least that’d be the charitable reading

I’m guessing he means it’d be pointless to get rid of the filibuster if the legislation will die in the House anyway, so Senate Dems wouldn’t bother unless the Dems also control the House

If my surgeon has any weird medical stats published somewhere I want it be in a fucking medical journal If she’s in the Guinness Book of World Records, it should be for, like, tying a bunch of knots really fast when she was 13 or something

So while I had to prove that I was a citizen to get my REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, my driver’s license doesn’t prove that I’m a citezen I’d be really surprised if any state DMVs bother to distinguish between citizens and lawfully present immigrants in their IDs
comment in response to post
Another cool thing is that the 1st acceptable form of ID the bill lists, an ID “issued consistent with the requirements of the REAL ID Act… that indicates the applicant is a citizen,” might not exist A REAL ID is proof of lawful presence, not citizenship

It’s like the writers said to themselves, “Sure, *one* deus ex machina is lazy, but what about 5 or 6 all at once?”

You said that a view that not all Jews hold (Zionism) is a basis for antisemitism, which is the hatred of all Jews And that’s before we even get into the the vagueness of the term “Zionism,” in this context
comment in response to post
Your implicit suggestion that all Jews are Zionists is, itself, anti-Semitic, as is your suggestion of collective guilt

No, he wouldn’t

If you’re citing to a court’s official reporter—here West Virginia Reports—you don’t need to specify the court parenthetically. I don’t think that changes if you include a parallel citation to a regional reporter
