In the back garden with the bat detector tonight - loads of pipistrelles flying between the old street oak and our sprawly hawthorn. And the new moon. Lots of insects. And the swifts are back.

Is A River Alive? is published today, 1 May. It’s about the lives, deaths & rights of rivers—& how our fate flows with that of water & always has. To the people, places & rivers whose ideas run through its pages, thank you so much. I think it’s the book I’ve been learning to write all these years.

Sumer is acumin in, Lhude sing cucu! But I remember deep snow on May Day 1981..

Terry Howard - Sheffield rambler, trespasser and campaigner for the Right to Roam in the 1980s through Sheffield Campaign for Access to Moorland. It was people like Terry who won the CROW Act. Please support the republishing of Terry Howard’s Moorland Notebook. www.kickstarter.com/projects/dan...

What follows if we imagine rivers as having lives, deaths––& even rights? I wrote this essay about water & hope; imagining rivers “otherwise”; nature’s rights; grammars of animacy; & how our fate flows with that of rivers—& always has. It’s from Is A River Alive? www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

First swifts. The earliest they’ve been back since my 6 years of surveying our colony.

Happy St George's Day. A reminder that half of England is owned by less than 1% of the population. Some of these aristocratic landowners have inherited land since the Norman Conquest. England needs land reform and a strong Community Right to Buy! whoownsengland.org

That meeting house outside Sedbergh is so lovely - thoughtfully written about here and provoking a rumination on war, peace and protest. I also love that place for its link with the poet Basil Bunting

Just a few more signatures & we’re there!

It's a straightforward relationship: high #inequality leads to the triumph of the far right. It will keep winning until governments deliberately seek to make societies more equal. I'm looking at you, Keir Starmer. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

🚨 Outrage as 20 police officers break into Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrest six. 🚨 This shocking violation of a place of worship is a direct result of crackdowns on protest and dissent - freedom of speech, assembly and democracy are at risk.🕊️ 👉 www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-eve...

Imagine if communities could own rivers, woods & peat bogs Labour’s Community Right to Buy *could* let people do this with a simple change to the law But rumours are circulating that this change is at risk of being dropped Me for @powertochange.org.uk: www.powertochange.org.uk/evidence-and...

Just writing the community news for nature-based events across the UK this spring. If you'd like to publicise your event in my Only Connect! Nature Newsletter, due out later this week, please could you send details? And if folk cd repost, I'd be grateful. Many thanks, Nic 🙏 #community #natureevents

Crew ok but oil and sodium cyanide are risks to bird and marine life in Humber estuary, Spurn Point, Flamborough.

I’d better not knock here.

Excellent news. Some much needed progress out of DEFRA of late. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Such a lovely piece. I’ve fond memories of exploring Hardy places too - we turned a William Barnes poem into a song, found lots of churches like the writer, explored Dorchester (Casterbridge) on one of the hottest days ever. And I often play Hardy’s favourite fiddle tune. The book looks so tempting…

So glad Mary feels LAND BENEATH THE WAVES is full of hope. 💚 #Chronicillness is challenging - it makes both human & more-than-human relationships more difficult, but I feel a strong sense of hope that we can learn from personal & natural history to improve things in the future. shorturl.at/GFASY

Brilliant protest. Yosemite National Park workers hung an upside-down American flag — traditionally a symbol of distress or a national threat — thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan.

I’m so disturbed by what’s going on globally, but here’s some good advice from Oliver Burkeman to keep yourself sane - which doesn’t necessarily mean turning away and doing nothing. ckarchive.com/b/4zuvhehpp2...

1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better? This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

“If you do not clear a decent shelter for your sorrow, and instead reserve most of the space inside you for hatred and thoughts of revenge - from which new sorrows will be born for others - then sorrows will never cease in this world and will multiply … “ (cont)

If you, or anyone you know, likes birdwatching and struggles with poor mental health. I’d love to send an e-copy of Bird Therapy (pdf) to read for free. It can be helpful to know you’re not alone. Please message me if you do and also consider sharing this post. #naturewriting #birdtherapy #booksky
