This is why we don’t need #US #cars in #Europe

Listening to Service Model, by @aptshadow.bsky.social, while I pack. It’s read by the author and, dang! He’s *good* at this. Like, Andy-Serkis-reading-LOTR good, which is high praise indeed! Bonus: Service Model has no songs (Apologies to Tolkien, but oof. Those songs are rough in audio format)

It's a good thing that superpowers are not real because if superpowers WERE real I'd use mine to conduct an experiment in applied nuclear physics—see if it's possible to smash Trump and Putin together face first so hard their heads start fusing heavy elements.

Let’s be clear - Shitler just crapped his pants. He blinked. The bond market was flashing red. He’s soiled his diaper and cried Uncle. In the meantime he destroyed $10trillion of savings and our national credibility. We are and have become a shithole banana republic. -Rick Wilson

Conversation among Canadian public health practitioners today: discussing how to raise awareness among Americans that they can turn to Canadian information sources when they're hit with raging epidemics and tainted food/health supplements that their own government won't inform them of.

I cannot stress how hard IRL political and corporate powers are making writing villains in sci-fi right now. Nothing I come up with lately even vaguely matches the levels of unethical, destructive, and exploitative behaviours we're seeing. Like, I'll write an idea, think, it's evil, then see a...1/2

Institutional Money™ is livid. I saw this coming months ago. And let me tell you, you don't get much bigger (and scarier) than BlackRock.

Yikes. The Financial Times editorial pages calling Trump a tyrant and predicting invasions and the destruction of the international order: that's … well, that's not giving me the happy fun feels.

Economist Peter Schiff: “The crash that's now happening in the bond market has more dire implications than…the stock market. If these tariffs remain in place, the US could have a full-blown financial crisis by the fall that makes the 2008 Financial Crisis look like a Sunday school picnic.”

so we're trying to recreate 1933 germany but also 1929 america in a whole new mash-up, I feel like somebody took the wrong lessons from a half-remembered high school history class

I'm furious at the local grocery store! I buy many things from them, often every week ... but they buy nothing, not one thing from me! You may mutter that the grocery has not need for services such as: math education, questionable short stories, or advice about ants... but I think this is […]

This is spreading fast in the UK. If it’s happening globally the US is in trouble.

As it's going around, do check out the hashtag #portfolioday and follow some artists to get a beautifully illustrated timeline.

You know what? Let's call him the #TOAD: Traitor Orange Assaulter Donald

Just noting here that I found it much easier to write satirical political fantasy about the UK electing an ancient Lovecraftian horror from beyond spacetime as Prime Minister with a mandate to eat everyone's brain before the real-world USA basically said "hold my beer ..."

It feels ridiculous to be a SF writer and rail so much against this sort of thing but, like GenAI, the existence of this kind of misdirection is actively going to set back real research because it will hoover up the support and funding with large promises, and deliver nothing of value.

The tariffs have just led an innovative U.S. company to scale back sales of its own goods in its home market. Who does this help? What sort of “medicine” is this?

Good executives describe their expectations in terms of outcomes. They let their staff—who inherently ought to have a better understanding of the mechanics of the processes they are responsible for—determine the appropriate methods to get things done. Leaders getting too involved in details are […]

This seems very plausible (even likely) to me: only ray of hope is that it's still 13 days away and things are going sideways FAST at the moment: https://medium.com/@aletheisthenes/on-april-20th-2025-the-united-states-will-cross-the-point-of-no-return-0aecac04cfc3

#WritersCoffeeClub April 7: World Health Day! What’s your take on the “suffer for art” argument? It's bullshit. Starving artists can't think straight to create. Homeless artists are too busy seeking shelter. Chronically ill artists are too weak or in too much pain to focus on art. To make art […]

Current mood … My Muse is SCREAMING at me to sit down and write my script for an updated re-make of Doctor Strangelove. (POTUS GOLDPANTS, in middling dementia, decides to evade the 25th amendment by barricading himself in the Oval Office and launching stealth bombers at Latveria. Etc.)

4am Bluesky was once about multigender thirst pics and now it's about the imminent global economic collapse and while I know that right now it really does have to be about the latter rather than the former let me tell you I liked it better when it was all about that first thing

This is a big deal. Spread the word. But it’s tiny compared to the totality of what’s happening at NIH. Cure Research for all cancers, Alzheimer’s, everything is being gutted. Intentionally. It’s all getting burned to the ground but the news isn’t getting out. The new cures won’t be there for you.
