This is an incredible loss. PRAMS (Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) has been essential for understanding care access and outcomes in the perinatal and postpartum periods. For example, intimate partner violence before or after childbirth www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/38733...

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

Scientists need to face the reality that this is not some temporary funding crisis while a bumbling administration sorts out their priorities. This is an intentional assault on academia by accelerationist extremists who wish to break society. Fascism must be met in the streets.

It matters that scientists speak out against what is being done to US science. Staying silent is neither "objective" nor "staying out of politics". Silence now *is* political - it supports the status quo, says "nothing to worry about". We need to sound the alarm. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Ashamed that my Alma mater WashU was also involved in this opinion piece. Now is the only time *remaining* to be political. The Sciences and Arts are political. If you are ‘two-sides’ing this, we know what side you are on.

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. https://go.nature.com/4gM6oW4

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

❌❌❌❌ they continue to leave roadblocks to NIH funding ❌❌❌❌

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Pretty sad. Just got the email that CZI is canceling the second round of Diversity Leadership Awards. Private industry will definitely not fill the hole that NIH and NSF are leaving. 😢💔

More and more scientists are joining the ranks of fired federal workers—and fighting back through protests, appeals, and legal challenges.

ACTION THIS WEDNESDAY: Researchers from New York universities are holding a rally to protest the funding cuts at Washington Square Park at 4 pm. This will be part of a national day of action, with rallies at HHS in DC and all around the country. RSVP HERE: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Gearing up

Fired for no reason. Our science and tech innovation (and $$$$) depends on the NIH/NSF/HHS grants management system and the new admin is breaking it for no absolute reason, while upending LIVES ! It’s NOT a partisan issue !

BlueSky academics, this is your moment. It's time to activate, rally your department, put pressure on university administration and public officials by showing that what is happening is not ok. That you will Stand Up. For science, knowledge, and humanity.

“As countries like China expand investments in biomedical research, cutting billions from NIH surrenders U.S. competitive edge, eliminates jobs, slows economic growth and hinders progress in American medical, scientific and technological innovation.” www.newschannel5.com/news/newscha...

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

This is important! Satellite rallies too! Going sends a message. Not going also sends a message. It's not self-serving for scientists to protest the war on science. Millions of people depend on us. A huge thank you to the early career scientists who are leading this! 🧪 #standupforscience

Trump & Elon are putting lifesaving research on life support with a massive funding cut based on an uninformed and illegal whim. Every Senate Democrat is joining me in demanding HHS stop the political games and allow researchers to keep up their important work, uninterrupted.

Sat down with former NIH director Monica Bertagnolli yesterday at #aaasmtg to talk about layoffs set to hit the NIH and other agencies “We’re going to lose the next generation, that is the most difficult loss," she said, adding she got very little sleep Friday 🧪 www.statnews.com/2025/02/16/n...

If you care about science & higher ed in America right now, your world has changed. We have been forced into a battle we didn’t choose. Whatever our titles, our jobs now also includes emergency response, psychological first aid, organizing & many other things we weren’t trained in

We have to stand up for science! Anyone who can join these rallies and believes that US science must be protected should come! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Got word that several NIH employees in a group working on cancer clinical trials got terminated via email this evening. “The [cancer research] trials will literally not be able to function without us.” Trump and Musk are killing cancer research. 🧪

To my many friends at NIH in DC. We love and respect you and your work. You do amazing things, both in research and supporting research and we need you. if you were wrongfully fired Friday know many of us will help if we can.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

Dear federal scientists: If you have been affected by the probationary firings and would be willing to speak with Science, please reach out to me by email ([email protected]) or on Signal. We can guarantee annonymity.

Mike Lauer follows Lawrence Tabak out the door at NIH www.statnews.com/2025/02/13/n...

What are the Dems doing about this? Or *anything *?

The National Cancer Institute’s Advisory Committee cancelled its meeting yesterday amid major changes/pausing of communications at #NIH. #Cancer research projects officially delayed.

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

If anticipatory obedience is bad, so are anticipatory nihilism, anticipatory surrender, anticipatory cynicism. It is not destined that your local elected officials, your church, your mosque, your school board, your union, your synagogue will not fight. Do not accept this as pre-ordained. It is not!

Imagine if university presidents instead of cowering, called up their faculty too speak in a round-the-clock marathon across the nation about how their research serves every American who has ever faced illness and disease.

Further confirmation that there is no enforcement mechanism for these orders. Musk and co. are going to keep going until someone physically stops them.

🧪Surprise, I'm back with another #breakingnews request. If you work in biomedical research (infectious disease, chronic disease, food safety, drug safety, vaccines, etc.), I'd love to hear (very soon) about how you think your field will fare under RFK's leadership of HHS. Please share widely!
