It's two things for me when I play:
1) Playing against the AI when it's a versus game stinks sometimes no matter how smart the AI is.
2) It isn't always about playing vs. someone who's good (though that helps) rather than the company. The game becomes a conduit for conversation, life and all that.

The challenge then is finding people who want to play alongside me. But we all deal with that (I hope).
