We need something like signal that's not so weirdly phone-centric. We have xmpp and matrix, but they really just haven't had high adoption. Signal requires a phone, and disclosure of your mobile number, which isn't acceptable. Telegram isn't actually a secure platform, nor is discord.

Encrypt everything, including encryption at rest. Filesystems, swap, etc. Use a modern algorithm, and strong factors to protect your key. It doesn't matter that you have nothing to hide—keep your data your own. At rest, during transport, and as much as you can during use. Normalize encryption.
