All at once, at the Federal level.

The National Archives is America's Library. "What is the purpose of the National Archives? The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent federal agency that preserves and shares with the public records that trace the story of our nation, government, and the American people."

There are a number of efforts from scientists, researchers, journalists, and advocacy groups to compile and save information that has been removed from federal websites (or is at risk). lifehacker.com/tech/find-de...

The administration says it will conduct a comprehensive review of grant recipients' political and social ideology before resuming any funding. www.everylibrary.org/statement_om... via @everylibrary.bsky.social

On Saturday Jan 18, we hosted a French TV news team to discuss the Library controversy in Llano. Here is the YouTube video. For a semi-decent translation, go to CC>Settings>Subtitles>Fr. to English

Well, that didn't take long. In case you were wondering what the first steps to suppressing freedom of expression are.

I just watched 'Banned Together' and realized it was a project I had contributed to last year. It was SUPERB. Consider watching, its original one-day premier has been extended to tomorrow.

A German citizen on Tiktok warns US users about the similarities between Hitler’s rise to power & Trump’s collision with Tiktok, goes viral, then when her prophecy comes true, the video is removed for community guidelines violation. Draw your own conclusions. I grabbed a screen recording. 👇👇

NO, I won't even be opening FB today. I'll be here!

We know that Trump's previous administration proposed cutting all federal library funding every year he was in office. But what does federal funding pay for, and why does it matter? You might be surprised! bit.ly/3WkmIWG via @everylibrary.bsky.social

Looking for something good to watch on Jan. 20? Here's just the thing! Watch it yourself or have a Watch Party!

Who else is sick of these shit-stirrers? Moms for Liberty is banning books and suing schools. Why? To save kids from… what? Knowledge? Critical thinking? If ignorance is bliss, these "Klanned Karenhood" crusaders are downright euphoric. www.wsws.org/en/articles/...

Fiction? Biography? True Crime? Romance? Western? Non-fiction? Audiobook? What are you reading this week?

Bad book news out of Fort Bend ISD, near Houston. The district has added 24 books to its “Do not order” list, effectively banning them from the district. The list includes books by Octavia Butler, Stephen King, Haruki Murakami, & Nobel-Prize winner Jose Saramago. www.fortbendisd.com/Page/169441

I have promised myself to read more this year and would like to keep a reading log. There are some online but I'd prefer that the file be mine.Google Forms may be a simple answer. You can easily use it from a computer or phone. And it results in a spreadsheet!

Yes!

This is how it's done. In January 2022, the Llano County Commissioners Court, Cunningham and Commissioner Jerry Don Moss voted to dissolve the county's library advisory board and appoint 12 new members, all of whom were part of the community group pushing for book removals.

YESSSSS

She shouldn't have to live like this. She just wanted to be a librarian.

Elmo has called on his followers to stop donating to Wikipedia which he derogatorily referred to as 'Wokepedia' due to its significant budget allocation for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. I went from a quarterly donation to a monthly donation.

I’m excited to announce I’ll be speaking at the NOLA Book Festival in March and I’m really looking forward to it! bookfest.tulane.edu/news/fourth-...

Do we really need to worry about shrinking attention spans? Here's another take, and one well worth considering.

In the case of Little et al vs. Llano County et al, one of the books removed from the library shelves was "They Called Themselves the K.K.K.: The Birth of an American Terrorist Group". And yet, the cover story was to 'root out pornography'. Liars, the far right is trying to root out our history.

Me, using the library, oblivious to what’s going on in our world.

A *key* victory was handed down in Arkansas yesterday, where a federal judge held that two sections of Arkansas's anti-library bill Act 372 violated the First Amendment. A big win for libraries + for anti-book banning. Here's the ruling, plus potential implications. bookriot.com/arkansas-act...

💯 No one has been more central to the publishing industry’s efforts to fight censorship than Skip Dye. Thank you to Skip and the entire PRH team for your generosity, expertise & tireless commitment to defending the freedom to read & supporting libraries. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Some rare good news out of Arkansas & a big L for Sarah Huckabee Slanders 👏👏👏

The Library of Congress announced Tuesday the 25 films that made it into the National Film Registry this year. Started in 1989, the registry now includes around 900 movies, chosen for their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to preserving America's film heritage.

This is a great listen. I can’t speak for my colleagues at @txfreedomread.bsky.social, but this is why I fight so hard against censorship. The books these writers mention are absolutely at risk of being pulled from schools and public libraries in Texas. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/r...

The well regulated militias (2nd amendment) created to capture runaway slaves are the direct forerunners of modern day policing in the US. To serve and protect (the slave owners) is as true today as it was then, the slave owners only now being rebranded as captains of industry and innovation.
