For someone who (as my husband would say) is obsessed with paths and roads and tracks, who dreams of them, writes stories about them (the pull of paths not taken…) I’ve never collected the photos I take of them. But here’s one.

See @dacs.org.uk for info on the Creative Rights in AI Coalition!

Last day to do this! GENERATIVE AI IS THEFT. I'm not an artist obvs but even I have been a victim of Gen AI with Google stealing my @brokenfrontier.bsky.social work word for word for their AI summaries, without permission, attribution or compensation. Let the UK government know what you think.

Ooh! The ebook is available to pre-order too!

The Government is siding with big tech over British creativity. Today is the FINAL chance to respond to their consultation on AI and copyright. Let's make sure creators' voices are heard. Guidance below 👇 #MakeItFair #PayTheCreator www.alcs.co.uk/news/your-ri...

In case it's of interest to anyone in these particular times. Our site is hosted in the EU and your ebooks are hosted in the UK. Just sayin...

For the final week of Black History Month we're offering a collection featuring both new and classic titles on Black History - on sale for 40% off. Buy two or more from this list and the discount will extend to all books on our website. (up to 3)

FOUR DAYS until the penultimate adventure in the Fermi's Wake series. To celebrate, and drive the ever-important last-minute preorders, if you show me proof of purchase of a Fermi's Wake season pass or Graveyard Orbit, I will draw you a crude picture of the monster that kills you on an away mission.

There we go.

We need more stories about how people win together and not because a savior with magical entitlement to Save the World swoops in to save the day

Google, Microsoft, and Meta's increasing use of data centers has resulted in increased air pollution from extensive fossil fuel energy consumption and associated public health costs related to treating cancers, asthma, and other similar issues, valued at over $5.4 billion in the past five years.

David Graeber on austerity.

“What were you looking for?” “Places the Prince and the general will be vulnerable. To a mob.” I sip my wine. “Or to one man.” Tarquin stares at me. His eyes do not blink for a long moment. “In daylight?” he says.

👍

If you use AI for your book cover and say artists need to 'get with it' while simultaneously whining about how insulting and saddening it is to 'all the time you spent writing' that people think your writing is AI gen too - maybe consider if you're a massive hypocrite. Also get out.

“What people say they want” is a key thing here. People answer survey questions the way they think they’re *supposed* to answer, and that’s without getting into leading questions. The crux is still the same: focus groups are not made to make good art. They’re made to be as inoffensive as possible.

The most exciting thing in your story, the moment of highest drama - that’s the midpoint, not the ending.

This is ESSENTIAL advice!

Someone asked: "So... public domain cosmic horrors that aren't Lovecraft. What do we got?" The tradition that gave us Lovecraft & co. is rich and deeply weird. While they aren't all cosmic horror, they all informed it. So. 1 like = 1 public domain weird story that isn't by H. P. Lovecraft.

Libraries buy books; authors receive royalties every time a book is sold. Authors aren't missing out on compensation. Libraries don't cheat authors. I'm an author. Libraries carry my books. I love libraries.

Not the sort of thing you want to be right about, but thanks to Sacrlet Ferret. Here’s to my next work about how to reshape the world—out in pieces this so we can put it out back together better

"Past behaviour is the best predictor of future performance." This maxim certainly holds true when reading the R/evolution books by @teneajohnson.bsky.social. If you know your US history, you KNOW that it repeats itself...

Today's the day all my deactivated Twitter accounts should have been deleted. I remember signing up for my first account, me personal one, in 2008. But today, happy to close them.

The fuckers went after Dolly's books!

Indiana just pulled funding for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program for the state. This program gifts all children, across the state, free books from birth-age 5. This one's just fucking cruel. www.14news.com/2025/02/19/t...

Europe also needs to start disentangling facebook from every aspect of life, Meta and the trump admin have already expressed the idea they'll use the leverage of the us to overthrow eu legislation where facebook find it disruptive. If tiktok was a threat to the us, facebook is a threat to the eu.

Fantastic news! I'm excited to see something like this, especially now. As a small tech-ish business owner, and of an ebookshop at @scarletferret.com, I'm keenly aware of the very real threat the push of AI presents. Even rearing its terrifying head in my day job with @charitytechnology.co.uk.

Eclipse isn't impressed. 😅

Later this month, Amazon is removing your ability to download your purchased ebooks. Readers use this feature to keep the ebooks they've bought and paid for. If the ebooks are DRM-free, it means you can read them on any device you want, not just a Kindle.

This isn't due to anything specific, but I do want to say; If you are telling artists or creatives to make weirder and more unmarketable art, it is in fact your obligation and duty at that point to promote/pass around/support those creatives when they *do* make that weirder art. Otherwise we can't!

Ah, my level right here.

we need to bring back words like wastrel, rogue, ruffian, ne’er-do-well. there is an epidemic of miscreants doing shenanigans and we have lost the vocabulary to describe them.
