"GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE"

Today is a great day to watch a film by two of my all-time favorite directors, Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi. Criterion Channel has a ton!

“I asked ChatGPT” yeah we’ll I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains, I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways, I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests, I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans, I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard

I was gonna say that Gristedes has been so bad for so long that growing up in NYC in the 80s even the horror show Red Apple was better than Gristedes, but now I find out this fucker owned both! The 87th street Red Apple was the ninth circle of Hell.

“Both regimes should be blatantly condemned for their persistence of violence, warfare, and absolute indifference to human dignity.” Jafar Panahi — www.instagram.com/p/DK_wkYRIAWL/

ELMER FUDD: *inside the criterion closet* miwwahs cwossing... twahmendous, just a twahmendous film ah ha ha ha .. here we go.... muwurhvern cawwahl

I’d naively though that my assignments were AI-proof, until I taught an online English class, and half of what I received was clearly but unprovably AI generated. I finally caught 3, because not only were the responses AI-ed, but the AI had hallucinated the passages they’d chosen to analyze.

You think you know just how much of a dipshit Bernie Kerik was, and then you read his obituary…

So glad to hear that Panahi—the greatest living filmmaker?—won the Palme d’Or. Can’t wait to see the film!

Roemer’s films—particularly the recently-rediscovered “Vengeance is Mine”—are all quiet, modest masterpieces. Let’s hope they find a few more lost Roemer films!

Biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at the Ohio Statehouse, despite the rain.

Having just taught The Conversation last week, this one hurts.

A friend of mine just pitched something to a studio and the executive said, “That’s great, but nobody is buying anything with a point of view right now.”

Another A Complete Unknown rant: the article is right that Dylan's politics are mostly of the vague, individualistic anti-authority "don't tell me what to do" kind--almost libertarian. And that's how the film portrays them. But they weren't like that in most of the years the film is chronicling!

Another tepid response to Citizen Kane from my intro to film students confirms my belief that students struggle with films that are slightly outside contemporary Hollywood modes but weirdly like those that are radically different--they love Celine and Julie Go Boating!

When I become a supervillain, my origin story will turn out to be that I was driven completely mad by reading 30 student workshop submissions in a row written in first-person present tense

Enjoyed the MLK quote on the signboard in front of the local segregation academy.

Since when did she get Love and Hate tattooed on her fists?

This is a beautiful tribute.

Well, fuck.
