Loves science. Willing to stand up and speak out for it. Really just wants to be in lab but here to scream into the void.

The Trump administration has terminated $800 million in grants to Johns Hopkins University, spurring the nation’s top spender on research and development to plan layoffs and cancel health projects

ATTENTION If anyone from Columbia is interested in communicating with reporters and/or can share documents to help reporters cover this nightmare and cover it accurately, PLEASE reach out to me (or have them do so) on signal (jeremymberg.78). 1/n

This is going to be one hell of a rollercoaster ride. Not the fun kind though. Like when you got on the Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens when you were 12 and got your head slammed around. Terrifying, painful and you can't stop it.

You want my thoughts? I'll give you my thoughts...🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 Oh, you want my understanding of why this is happening? There is no reasonable justification not to have these scheduled at this point. Even if they need to sort out dealing with applications that include "forbidden" topics, schedule now.

Joined @pien-huang.bsky.social and Rob Stein on Short Wave to talk through how the first 50 days of the Trump administration has harmed science. It's a firehose of an episode. www.npr.org/2025/03/11/1...

UPDATE on Mahmoud Khalil from his lawyers and his wife: "Today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament." (Legal team now includes ACLU, CCR.)

Why wouldn't you want to understand vaccine hesitancy?(Gift link) wapo.st/3Dw7WG0

The Pentagon has abruptly scrapped its entire social science research program. The decision “is short-sighted and harmful to U.S. national security,” @jaylyall.bsky.social told me. It “suggests they don’t care about better understanding threats the U.S. faces,” says @busbyj2.bsky.social.

And this is BEFORE Bhattacharya’s confirmation vote. If Bhattacharya becomes NIH director he’ll weaponize the whole NIH grant portfolio like this— to serve political ends. Not just for vaccines but to punish universities Republicans do not like.

The Ed. Department's Office for Civil Rights sent letters to 60 additional institutions "warning them of potential enforcement actions" for "violations relating to antisemitic harassment and discrimination" including Harvard, Brown, Stanford, Princeton, UNC, and several UC's

wapo.st/3Dw7WG0 NIH email: “It is the policy of NIH not to prioritize research activities that focuses gaining scientific knowledge on why individuals are hesitant to be vaccinated and/or explore ways to improve vaccine interest and commitment...Therefore, the award is terminated.”

This is a clarification of this ruling law.justia.com/cases/federa... enjoining banning DEI programs or blocking the issuing of grants with DEI components.

Includes NIH.

JUST IN: A federal judge clarifies that his order barring enforcement of Trump EO on "DEI" funding applies to *all* federal agencies, not just those named in the lawsuit. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

In this Q&A, we asked why they organized Stand Up for Science. Here are the answers: www.nature.com/articles/s41... @leslie-bern.bsky.social @emmalovesscience.bsky.social @cdelawalla.bsky.social @jpflores.bsky.social @samschuelstein.bsky.social @standupforscience.bsky.social

Exactly. This sort of “on your permanent record” poisoning is a hugely predictable concern. It serves their interest in excluding people of color from federal service and federal grants/contracts.

fun fact:

Mostly bad news here but one very useful reminder: "With widespread disruptions in research, outcry led the administration to begin scheduling study sections and publishing in the Federal Register, both legally required to for federal grants." Yelling works sometimes. Keep yelling!

Why'd we organize @standupforscience.bsky.social ? Check it out below in @naturehumbehav.bsky.social @cdelawalla.bsky.social @samschuelstein.bsky.social @emmalovesscience.bsky.social @leslie-bern.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is probably the answer, sadly. Seems obvious to me that the NIH is withholding appropriated funds by blocking the review process, but I'm no lawyer. The federal register block will prove to be enormously damaging to biomedical research in the USA.

The NIH budget of $47 billion is unchanged in the new CR, which is at FY24 levels.

It doesn't matter what your views on the Middle East or protests on college campuses may be, targeting people like this un-American and authoritarian and must be condemned. open.substack.com/pub/dropsite...

Mmmhmm

I was that woman! I have frequently told the story of how Jeremy responded after my second NIH rejection. He said, “Whatever you do, don’t stop spending. If you run out of startup, we’ll find more money for you.” I didn’t need it in the end, but knowing he had my back was huge. Thank you!

What’s in yesterday's House Continuing Resolution? Major shifts in U.S. health spending you should know about: HRSA cut by $891 million NIH CURES Act cut by $280 million Children & Families Services cut by $40 million These cuts hit essential services and future innovation. 🧵⬇️

Call your reps! Dem or Repub. Some of them have been hiding behind the whole "we haven't actually proposed any cuts" idea. Well, here they are. Major cuts. Being proposed. www.congress.gov/members/find...

First and foremost, an incredible THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Stand Up for Science—whether you attended our events, donated, shared, or volunteered. We are so humbled by how many people showed up to support us & all of the passion that people brought with them.

Omg, right?

Yes. Also, it is very likely that these firings are ILLEGAL. If these are GS employees, as most scientific review officers (SROs) are, they cannot be terminated without a *lengthy process*. #NIH'ers desperately need external legal advice. Stat. Who is going to step up? @bradmossesq.bsky.social

Big protest in support of science and medical research outside of National Institutes of Health @altnih4science.bsky.social just outside of DC. @raskin.house.gov was there.

The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history. We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

ATTENTION: TALENT AVAILABLE It appears that termination of SROs from institute review branches at NIH is underway (or worse). There are also program officers and SROs who have been terminated over the past month. IF YOU HAVE POSITIONS FOR SKILLED SCIENTIST-ADMINISTRATORS, PLEASE POST INFO HERE

I was happy to #standupforscience2025 yesterday. And of course, I have been thinking about things I didn't have a chance to say. Like because of the chaos at NIH (and the freezing of funding), how my team has been waiting for NOAs for two non-competing renewals since mid-January. 1/
