I don't disagree that the US university business model was/is fragile, but surely not for this reason?
There is no society in the history of humanity that has successfully built a good university system without massive govt subsidies. US had already pushed the idea very far.

Look at what Hegseth is doing to the military schools.
I sit on a board that gives out 2 scholarships a year for a rural HS. I read their applications. Not everyone needing money are DEI. Lotta white boys want to be veterinarians.

Not to dispute your point - in a technical civilization of nation-states, public funding of universities is a necessity.
Yes the VAT is much higher than our sales taxes yet many items seem to be the same price or even lower. Electronics are about the only thing consistently more expensive elsewhere.
Roads, utilities, parks and schools for employees, health insurance for their parents so they can remain in the workforce, peace and prosperity so their goods have customers who can afford to buy.
(I would add that there was church-funded higher ed at that time, though that was functionally the same thing for the time.)
