“Do you know of any challenge in the history of humankind that was successfully overcome that began with pessimism and defeatism? There isn’t. So optimism is a choice.” — Christiana Figueres, who knows what it looks like to tackle seemingly impossible challenge – and succeed!

Magnifiques aurores filmées depuis l'ISS par l'astronaute Don Pettit

Some of his readers have asked Mike Masnick @mmasnick.bsky.social why his technology news site, Tech Dirt, has been covering politics so intensely lately. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w... I cannot recommend Mike's reply enough. It's exactly what readers need to hear, what journalists need to do.

Hi - I'd like to share this story of what is happening at NOAA GFDL, where some of my colleagues and I worked until the mass firings at NOAA last week. "...the birthplace of weather and climate forecasting"

I've told this story about my early education on fascism before but not on Bluesky. I vividly recall doing a project in school about history. Maybe I wanted to do the Korean War because I was a big MASH fan. That I don't recall. My physics teacher arranged for me to do a live interview... 🧵

I stand with the trans community. Pass it along.

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Star Trek did say the 2020s were gonna be a little rough

Happy Black History Month! Here is my favorite story about a Black American you may not know about: Robert Smalls. He commandeered a confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and the other enslaved crew and their families to freedom. THROUGH waters controlled by the Confederacy.

remember, the blitzkrieg is intended to make you feel like there is nothing you can do about it; that’s the only reason to go forward in this haphazard and sloppy manner all in the first week and the choice of that strategy tells you they are afraid you *will* do something about it

A nice piece on PRI and the Museum of the Earth by a current Cornell student who has been touched by PRI's work. See related link in the first comment. cornellsun.com/2025/01/20/g...

My gingerbread for this year. Merry Christmas and happy Voyages to all!!

I thought this art was excellent... even better that it's from an @rittigers.bsky.social artist! Fantastic work, @dirtmossart.bsky.social ! #agu24

I presented my #AGU24 talk this morning and wanted to summarize my take homes. 20 yrs ago I created the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) to experimentally push hydrology into wetter and drier modes. CO2 emissions are remarkable stable while CH4 is very high with flooding. 1/

I return to this poem often, and have posted it around my neighborhood when the times call for it. Today is as good as any day to return to it.

Some of the nice things about #AGU24 being local are that I don't have to book a hotel, can still see family, etc. They're also the most challenging things. 75% of what I want to see is first thing in the morning, while I'm still getting my family going for the day and riding the Metro downtown.

Permafrost contains 50% of all the soil carbon found on Earth (upper 3 meters). We need to keep that carbon in the ground. Fast permafrost facts to kick off the Permafrost Carbon Network meeting.

Patiently awaiting the launch of Sentinel-1C... Sentinel-1A is getting lonely up there! #sentinel1

Oh, this? Just sunlight reflecting off a lake. A lake of liquid methane. On an icy world 1.4 billion kilometres away.

Time for a fresh start.
