The math is that if we had docked e-scooters in the mix at the same rate that they do in Chicago (40%) then we would be at 20%…at 0$ capital cost to the city…

We wrote to encourage them to not be so bike centric and perhaps also use e-scooters…would be helpful for the city to ensure the roads are safe for us as well…

And in Toronto you can’t ride an escooter if you are 25 or 45…when you advocate for dumb rules, expect dumb rules to apply to you as well…spacing hasn’t been consistent on this at all…

Come on…this guys org spoke at council in an attempt to get e-scooters banned…exactly the same situation…what goes around comes around… @cycletoronto.bsky.social has advocated for exactly this situation…

Fully agree…no deaths of escooter riders in Toronto, yet we are “banned”…

Looking forward to when spacing recognizes that they are also scooter lanes…

As @mckelvieto.bsky.social says, we need to learn from other cities and figure out a way to get to YES on scooters...this is only half the problem of course, we still need to opt in to private scooters...

What does this mean for Toronto? It means that to get to a similar amount of rides we will have to invest a lot more money than Chicago has, and we may never be able to catch up, because the reality is that many folks prefer to use scooters...
comment in response to

So have they pulled back as @mckelvieto.bsky.social stated? No...not since 2020...and in fact ridership between of the entire fleet (bikes and scooters) is 11m...much higher than Toronto's...and bikes only make up 6m of that - slightly less than Toronto's bike system...5m are scooter rides...

So, what does this look like in practice...here is the info sheet at divvy: t.co/I76LhzFh6j

As part of this pilot there is a public component (Divvy - which shares a common heritage with Toronto Bikeshare) and private components (Lime and Spin - which are capped at 12500 scooters)...that's 12500 vehicles that the city didn't have to invest in, a larger fleet than Toronto's bikeshare system

Further improvements have included requiring software to prevent sidewalk riding (something the bikes don't require) and a requirement that scooters be locked to bike parking, or in a dock...
comment in response to

Since then the pilot was expanded, and aspects of it have been improved or changed, including removal of after midnight restrictions... blockclubchicago.org/2024/04/17/y...

First, Chicago started their pilot in 2019, and once that pilot was complete as expected the scooters were removed...only to return with a second pilot in 2022... abc7chicago.com/electric-sco... this is how pilot's are supposed to work, you fix problems and try again...

And yet guess who gets banned…

policylab.rutgers.edu/are-e-scoote... would love your thoughts on this one. Seems like a more up to date study, with interesting results.

Dude, one of the main reasons I don’t ride a bike and use an escooter is because I don’t have full mobility in my knee after I was hit by a car. Shut up…
comment in response to
post
Which one?
comment in response to
post
Toronto stats show that current usage is about 20% of bikes in many locations…personally I have been hit by a car while riding a bike, and we would never blame cyclists for being killed by drivers…
comment in response to
post
The injury studies you have pointed to are suspect. Which one in specific should we point holes in?
comment in response to
post
And no scooter users in Toronto have been killed…or killed anyone…
comment in response to
post
All we said was that by the logic you are using that bikes and cars should both also be banned…
comment in response to
post
But since you seem to care about only bikes and scooters…bikes should be banned as well, since they have such a high death rate…
comment in response to
post
If a car is more unsafe than a scooter then they should be banned as well…seems only reasonable…
comment in response to
post
When did we blame a cyclist for dying? The original post was us blaming a car for hitting a cycling dock station…
comment in response to
post
We don’t sell or have any interest in selling scooters (which isn’t illegal in Toronto anyways)…we are purely an advocacy group with the goal of getting scooters legalized…
comment in response to
post
Have you seen what happens when a car hits a wall? Come on…every mode has danger, but a 20kmh speed limited scooter is never going to have as much risk as a car being driven at 100 or even 50kmh…
comment in response to
post
And almost all of them don’t take into account the cause of the incident (in almost all cases getting hit by a car)…in fact we are not aware of any deaths in Ontario that didn’t involve a car (except for the one involving a senior who was found dead without any witnesses at night)…
comment in response to
post
That report is 3 years old, and it just refers to reports that are older…we’ve been over this before, but most of the reports are from systems that were implemented in entertainment districts or with scooters that had poor gen 1 geometry…most don’t take into account alcohol usage…
comment in response to

Walter, how many folks have died biking in Toronto? And how many e-scooter riders have? Usage is 20% of that if bikes…but for some reason scooter riders aren’t dieing at the rate you might expect…we aren’t paid, we make no money off scooter sales, just folks who want to get around…

would love to see a president scooter in my lifetime

Most kids are better scooter riders than their parents...and have been doing the non-motorized version since before they could walk...on sidewalks, roads and school playgrounds...sometimes in skate parks and other higher risk areas...
comment in response to

0 scooter users have died or killed anyone in Toronto, ever...the injury increase is directly related to the amount of folks using scooters...and increases at the same rate as other types of active transportation - walking, cycling etc...as one might expect...wear a helmet and be safe....

Please note, we don't believe it was an actual e-scooter...but a moped style scooter...moped style scooters allowed, e-scooters actually not allowed...sigh...
