Our Patreon subscribers now have early access to this week's episode with Scottish author Chris McQueer. It's a really honest and refreshing chat, hearing about how becoming a full-writer wasn't all it was cracked up to be - and also some funny anecdotes like this. Join now: patreon.com/ukpageone

the trick is we do not have a real shortfall of £140M or anything remotely like that. it is a big number to scare us derived in from a mix of projections and an arbitrarily high target annual surplus, as far as one can tell from what we've been told

How on earth do you reach a point where you suddenly have to save £140 million? Like. How badly have been looking at your stuff? That you didn't notice a problem the size of A HUNDRED AND FORTY MILLION?

LOVE this paper - have followed it from seeing talks and posters by Ashling, @alexcammack.bsky.social, and @adrianisaacs.bsky.social then the Biorxiv last year. Exquisite use of flies🐝 and human cell models🧠 to find out that neuronal fatty acid saturation is important in the development of ALS/FTD!

Really excited this is out! We found polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were beneficial in models of C9orf72 FTD/ALS and the greatest benefit occurred when increasing levels specifically within neurons @ukdri.ac.uk @uclqsion.bsky.social @ucl.ac.uk @cziscience.bsky.social rdcu.be/ebbZf

My favourite part of the new Captain America movie is when he tries to extort Wakanda for $500b in Vibranium rights before "ironically" teaming up with Hydra to own the libs.

This to me is the most striking finding on the depth of UK support for Ukraine. We know there is strong support for Ukraine in general but the fact that it even persists traded off against maintaining relations with for the US is a testament to how deep that support is.

Pull the plug on it all over Europe as @neilmackay.bsky.social suggests

In 2000, Scottish Labour in government stood up to well-funded bigotry, acted against popular opinion, and faced down the lies that were told to enable oppression, when it repealed Section 28. Today Scottish Labour is running scared of well-funded bigotry, popular opinion and lies. For shame.

🧵 When I said my government would leave no stone unturned to find the solutions to secure Grangemouth’s future, I meant it. I’ve just set out some measures to Parliament seeking to protect workers and secure Grangemouth’s future. Here’s a thread 👇 1/8

This one is wild...

Nursing a take that the major Silicon Valley firms can be understood as organized crime syndicates and perform some of the same functions as the old ones used to — money laundering, feeding addictions, skirting regulations, political influence.

Thanks to all of the NIHers and their friends who reached out to me. I am still here (DM me or Signal jeremymberg.78) I still have a very incomplete picture but based on what I have been told, the damage to NIH and to many wonderful people who work(ed) there is/was impossible for me to imagine 1/n

A really smart essay about how Timothée Chalamet mastered the art of the modern press run in support of "A Complete Unknown." The ball knowing on ESPN, the obscure Dylan covers on SNL, the gushing about the Based God on Nardwuar. By @ocksportello.bsky.social www.passionweiss.com/2025/02/11/c...

With yet more going round the houses in council tax - here is the secondary legislation I actually drafted that could reform it tomorrow andywightman.scot/2024/02/scra...

For International Day of Women & Girls in Science, we've teamed up with Race Against Dementia to spotlight 3 brilliant researchers working across our organisations👏 Dr Aitana Sogorb-Esteve, Dr Maura Malpetti & Dr Claire Durrant discuss their biggest ambitions & who inspires them👉 buff.ly/3EzNswj

Our story about flies on carousels is out in @currentbiology.bsky.social! After formally engaging the fantastic @clarahowcroft.bsky.social and integrating helpful reviewer feedback, we present a more concise story with detailed behavioural quantification and cooler videos! doi.org/10.1016/j.cu...

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Dear All, I believe that this thread will become one of my most important contributions to the fly field (I hope I will make other contributions)! Here, I introduce the Soy Milk Machine Fly Food Method, a.k.a., DeepCook!#Drosophila#NewPI

Dumbshit Treasury brain stuff this: India and Denmark etc just said 'we would like to electrify our rail network, we will set up an arm of government to steadily do it all'. Their teams finish one project then go straight to next. In the UK we do it piecemeal with no future work guarantee, costs ££.

Sadly, our colleague and friend Scott Hawley passed away this morning. He was an irreplaceable presence and force for good in the meiosis an Drosophila communities and will be sorely missed.

Love my colleagues 🥰 They got me these lovely gifts for the birth of my second daughter, Alice

I've built a machine that can be Confidently Wrong. It can also make pictures that all look a bit the same, as well as make a video of you kissing any celebrity or person you know. In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

I think one of the reasons this irked me so is that, when your formative years are heavily defined by Welsh valleys matriarchs, the notion that 'feminine energy' somehow means weakness, and not getting things done, is completely alien to you.

Microscopy Nodes is now up on bioRxiv! 🚀 This is a Blender extension that seamlessly integrates and visualizes 3D microscopy data (TIF & @zarr.dev). High-quality volume rendering for anyone, in both EM and fluorescence, regardless of computational expertise! 🔬 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Oooh this is a great one 🥰👋⚡️

Ah I forgot about some of these songs..... <3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vRg...

Explain your username: Scottish Friction was the name of my music blog (lol I know). Name was from an Idlewild Song. It was a mixture of new music that I loved and photos I had taken on my toy cameras (e.g. below). It was listed on Hype Machine (IYKYK). Evidence -> www.facebook.com/p/Scottish-F...

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Probably one of the toughest I've ever listened to but yesterday's #TheNewsagents with Andrew Norfolk is an absolute must. That @lewisgoodall.com and @maitlis.bsky.social barely spoke throughout speaks volumes.

We report 35 patients with biallelic RBL2 loss-of-function variants presenting with developmental delay/intellectual disability, hypotonia, seizures, microcephaly & brain abnormalities. Drosophila models recapitulate key features & suggest RBL2 re-expression may help rescue neurological symptoms.

I honestly think that at least 25% of my "followers" here aren't real

This album is a pleasure and a revelation
