Day 4 of the Supreme Court of the United States struggling with this sentence.

Can't be emphasized enough that the image of the US deporting people for things they said is so much more damaging to its foreign policy interests than anything a student might have said on the quad

This government is not legitimate.

When someone is allowed to detach public power from law & wield it as a personal tool, then you, your family, and your property become less secure.

Venture capitalist explaining that Trump’s WH, unlike Biden’s, is pure pay-for-access. Which he thinks is a good thing.

describing struggling people who need help as "playing video games all day"—all while giving $38 billion in gov contracts to elon musk to *literally* play video games all day—is vile on every possible level. failed state behavior

We are still in the middle of the biggest trade war in a century and the biggest tax increase in decades, despite the partial “pause” of even higher tariffs that did not exist a couple weeks ago.

How does an idea cross a border illegally? What are the thoughtcrime laws? If an idea originated abroad, but I didn't know that and happened to come up with it independently, will I have an opportunity to prove it in court? "Popped into my head in the shower" doesn't leave an evidentiary record.

A CR where Trump promised to impound the money they don’t like. They’ve always been frauds on the debt. They’ve also been given assurances the big cuts can continue in the reconciliation bill.

It’s amazing that things like cutting FDA funding are never framed as, “I think private companies should be able to profit from having you literally eat shit and you shouldn’t be able to do anything about it”

The fundamental problem with moderate Democrats is they fully believe they have no agenda setting abilities with voters. They just think voters are locked in on 3 issues and nothing you do can or will change it. The GOP knows you can make an issue out of anything if you treat it with urgency.

The GOP is handing Dems a loaded gun on anti-corruption, and timid Dems like Jason Crow are doing everything in their power to not shoot them with it. The most nakedly corrupt administration in American history gets a pass on corruption because it's not a kitchen table issue? COME ON.

I asked Gemini to write a simple text parsing formula the other day and it couldn’t even do that

Worth noting that this passed by one vote and two Democratic congresspeople have died in office in the last six weeks.

If you want to spark a depression, ruin the credibility of the FDIC and watch the bank runs cripple the entire system

The lesson for universities is you may as well fight back. You'll lose the money either way. The only question is whether you keep your dignity.

The Chinese went all in — jacking up their tariffs, selling Treasuries, probably threatening to pull back from today’s regularly scheduled auction of new Treasuries. And Donald Trump blinked. WEAKEST. PRESIDENT. EVER.

the basic problem facing american democracy is that one party has decided it wants a king and will hand over as much authority as is necessary to make that happen

Not much to investigate lol

Terrified of the subway, unable to use a dishwasher properly

Media challenge: try writing headlines without using the word "antisemitism". Stop using Trump's framing for his authoritarian actions. "Trump administration now monitoring immigrant social media" would be shorter and more accurate, since no-one really believes this is about anti-semitism.

1) Do something autocratic 2) Wait to see how people react 3) If they don't push back hard enough, carry on 4) If they do push back hard enough, "pause" it 5) Illegally consolidate more power 6) Repeat

Trump has done more in April to bring about the debt crisis the GOP has fearmongered about than everything that’s happened in the last 25 years combined

America is a kleptocracy

How does any of this still pass muster for an “emergency”? How can any judge look at what he’s doing and conclude it’s an emergency power he’s still utilizing? How can an emergency action get delayed 90 days?

Got a q if you’re a company knowing that a recession and tariffs are heading directly at you. Why not take advantage of the uncertainty and raise prices now anyways?

I mean “not caring is cool and caring is cringe” is fundamentally a sociopathic mentality

I have long maintained that the “don’t sell out not caring is cool caring is cringe” thing was bound to turn evil, this is not unrelated to the fact that I hate the movie American Beauty

Gotta say Amazon but for human trafficking is a new one

People have made these arguments PEG is just a baby and rejects them. The arguments: 1. We actually don’t have a manufacturing crisis in America 2. Trade deficits don’t matter and are good for America. 3. The tariffs don’t solve any of the few stated objectives we’ve been given.

I'm going to say something not nice: a lot of you spent years and years riding the China scaremongering train and own part of this.

I just want to reiterate that the White House Press Secretary — predictably but notably — lied through her teeth about this when asked.

Manufacturing a debt crisis while adding $9T to the debt is another genius move

Under a lawless government run by thugs we are all just an administrative “error” away from being seized and shipped to a foreign concentration camp.

There's no logical or moral or strategic defense for what we're doing right now. It's an idiotic plan being implemented with a level of incompetence that has no possible explanation.

Wow like a partnership that spans across the Pacific where partners receive favorable trade conditions to pressure China. Genius! Why didn’t we think of this 10 years ago?

(The Telegraph) - Donald Trump is systematically purging every US government institution, a pattern familiar to anybody who has studied the caudillo regimes of Latin America, or the playbook of today’s Putin-Orbán-Erdoğan prototypes. @telegraphnews.bsky.social www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

Yup!

💯 Dems should also commit to a specific position: Trump has not honored the promises and agreements of his predecessors and we will not honor his. If you're gullible enough to trust an assurance from Trump, understand that it is gone the moment he is.

do we still live in a democratic society? when you can be black bagged and whisked off to a foreign prison without due process and the supreme court reverse engineers legal justifications? when the president disregards congress and courts at his whim? when media bend over backwards to legitimize?

Kidnapping. Capturing a person against their will without due process is called kidnapping. Transporting them to another country without due process is called human trafficking. A squalid extrajudicial prison for people found guilty of no crime is called a concentration camp.

I'm not kidding that any Dem who wants to run in 2028 should get out ahead of this and loudly say if El Salvador puts American citizens in Trump's gulag we'll fucking invade.

The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*
