Worth noting that this passed by one vote and two Democratic congresspeople have died in office in the last six weeks.

All but three House Republicans just voted for Trump's tariffs. The procedural measure, which preemptively surrenders congressional power to stop Trump's tariffs, passed with all Democrats voting no. This was the vote count:

...Nah, that'd be crazy, that'd threaten the corpses' power and money!
The problem with national Dems is that the whole committee system in the house and senate runs on seniority. 1/2
This must change! We as voters should demand this in every town hall and in phone calls to our elected representatives.
This was the vote to allow Trump to rule through tariffs.
Also of note, it passed by 1 vote with two Dem's passing away in the last several weeks.
The main story of that vote isn't the close margin. It is not the dead Ds. It is not the three Rs defections either.
The main story here is House Republicans are a partner in the President's tariffs policy, instead of being a check & balance.
What is the biggest threat to our Country rn?
It's the economic crisis that is Trump's tariffs.
A stocks market crash impacts People's retirement funds, losses in business shares that'd cause mass layoffs of workers. Also hits the bankablity of the US, which makes higher interest rates for all.
Trump's tariffs calamity can be stopped by Congress.
House Republicans VOTED to avoid stopping the Trump's tariffs. Which will impact ALL Americans more than anything any dem is doing.
Thus, the fact that Rs have the power to stop it & they're not stopping it IS THE MAJOR NEWS from that vote.
C’mon people, let’s be Real!
The SCOTUS which is the ONLY remedy to the stop against this nightmare it’s all IN to control & Destroy the Checks & Balances of this corrupt administration. We NEED TO IMPEACH!
Abbott is the asshole here, but the local dems are not blameless.
They can't just stop doing dumb stuff, it wouldn't fit the brand.
He was a mediocre former mayor, and was dying, so a few folks said “we will let you run for congress so you have free healthcare till you die, it’s not like we need the seats or anything”
Representative Lee was nominated in his district but she was diagnosed with surprise pancreatic cancer and died. The Dems asked Turner to step in. He did and repeated that he was still cancer free.
For November. 🙄
A party with no succession planning. Who the hell lets their team stay until they die?
Get new leaders or die as a group.
Went through this with a terminally ill coworker.
But still, I have been thinking about those 2 Dems who died in office, haven't seen much in the news about it- like think pieces and such.
Whereas the ideological fanaticism of the Republican base culls more of their old and weak.
56 Democrats > 70
(It was 58 but 2 died within just 7 weeks of taking office)
30 Republicans >70 - sadly not even one of whom is dead yet.
Absurd.
68 out of 213 Dems - so 32%- are aged 66+
Over a third are 65+
#handsoff
Don't forget about any of the Americans this regime is trying to make disappear...

Stop dying in office
Clearly nothing will change until we hopefully get a chance to vote these people out. Hope we last that long.
We have no representation.
The FTC Chair stepped down in January and the Dem commissioners fired recently. How convenient.
Jr. got the message. Do you think Eric did? lol

Honestly i'm surprised that you and those in your circle haven't really focused on this.
NO OATHS AFTER 70

What is it about serving in Congress that leads to so many deaths?

Never was.
Idiot House Republicans own this.
but I very much doubt it will happen
May they burn in hell
/s if it wasn’t obvious
Boom. Lawyered.
Grijalva seems to have known he was too ill but the local Dem Party didn't find a replacement for some stupid reason
I have seen it over and over . Win the battle lose the war.
i can't believe everybody else seems to have memoryholed that bit
No one memory-holed it, because it didn't happen.
Then he himself implied he would but in a noncomittal way https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2023/09/biden-reelection-transition-president/675395/
So it's true but very flaky, much like maybe forgiving student loans
Then his ego got the best of him and he put Harris' campaign at a disadvantage
I know some large accounts on Twitter said the Politico article was "Biden secretly leaking this" but it wasn't. He clear said in 2022 he was running again.
Also affirms for me that primarying them is paramount
it should be in the 60s
69 or less to run for the House.
No one who qualified for Medicare should run for public office.
Those seats belong to US, not you.
You have to be more strategic and less selfish.
Why?
Retire. We can afford it. You deserve it.
Really seems like this would have been a great time to do that. Yea it might have ended in another one dying from old age, but at least they would have finally accomplished something for once.
Diane Feinstein died and still showed up to work for years.
In November.
Almost as if the GOP
dials in how many they can allow to vote against their position.
If the 2 Dems were still alive and there to vote, only 1 Republican would have voted no.
With margins this tight, small differences matter a lot tactically. It’s like a special teams situation in the sport of your preference.
Look at votes on budget rules, resolution. Even the GOP reps who introduced tariff legislation (Bacon, Hurd) voted for the 6 month rule!
No matter what is said publicly, the GOP caucus holds the line.
Same with 1 conservative on the Supreme Court that votes to show they're not just a rubber stamp for Trump. But it's always just 1 and whatever blatantly anti-constitutional order gets upheld.. 5 to 4.
In the senate it’s a simple majority for most things and what they need to pass Trumps budget & codify Musk’s cuts into law using rescission & reconciliation. Oh. And they have 53 votes so no democratic votes at all
“Seems something that big should require a larger majority”. And fyi.. the actual budget bill is a whole lot bigger
to this nonsense with heart attacks.
And that since 2000 twice as many Democrats have died in office than Republicans.
And in House 56 Dems but 'only' 30 Reps are aged >70.
If gerontocracy is a stupid idea in the best of times it's a suicidal one in these very worst of times.
Lots of violence follows Trump. Maybe that explains the bad Dem votes. Whaddaya think?
Wait... TWO democratic congresspeople DIED in the last 6 weeks?!
