It is kind of ironic that Trump wants Canada as his 51st state, but all of his efforts appear to be turning America into Russia’s 47th oblast.

I’m George Takei and I approve of this message.

President Zelenskyy has been one of the greatest leaders of our time, guiding Ukraine through the darkest period of its recent history, rising up to Russia’s unwarranted aggression, being an inspiration to the Ukrainian people and ensuring that Ukraine’s voice is heard on the world stage.

One of the best articles I’ve read about the age we are entering. And it touches on something that we need to discuss more: in authoritarianism it is *logical* to cede power to those in power. Or rather, it is seemingly logical. Ultimately, even after you give in, they’ll come for you.

Hey NYTimes — *now* you’re lighting the beacons? NOW?!? After months of “Sauron: Avatar Of Evil… Or Extreme Uniter?” thumbsucker reporting you’re screaming what we’ve known since 2015? Fuck all the way off.

The "messy middle" of change: gap in the change process between intent/ambition & the ability of a system/org/team to make progress. Without methods to motivate people to work towards something new, we may never get past it. benholliday.com/2025/01/28/t... @benholliday.com. Graphics:Tash Willcocks

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Hike. Hike who? Unsuspecting child, Dad waiting with baited breath, Sets the perfect trap.

Almost 70 women were killed by men in Australia last year. @georgiaroberts.bsky.social has been collecting this data herself, on behalf of the ABC, and amidst her usual job, for 12 months. It provides some tragic and shameful insights but no one should be surprised. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Measles is a really horrible disease and a big killer when vaccination rates don't keep it controlled - much worse than chicken pox that people in rich countries have more recent experience of.

This ten year old paper by my friend & colleague Eugenia Kalnay and colleagues modeling the combined effects of environmental degradation and wealth disparity on societal stability didn't get much attention at the time. It feels especially relevant now: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The Business Council of Australia is warning all sides of politics to avoid "populist" election promises such as backtracking on climate targets or "scapegoating" foreign students for the housing crisis.

RONALD REAGAN (1988): We should be aware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag.

The last thing I'll say is if you're outside of the US— Look at what's happening as a lesson to take your country/local politics and elections seriously. The political trends in other countries around the globe are growing more right-wing and are not so far behind what's happening here in the US.

There is one, and ONLY ONE, reason for doomscrolling here to see Trump's latest outrage. And that's to make sure it doesn't happen here. As P.Keating said of Dutton: “a charlatan”, “wicked and cynical” and “an inveterate climate change denialist”.

A good idea, I think, one for Australian governments to contemplate implementing. There is an opportunity here.

About bloody time. Late justice. This compensation does not make it better but vindicates a few of those victims abused by Pell. Disgusting behaviour by the church and their leadership. youtu.be/DZdUw3UgeIY?...

Really, a good short story to warm your heart. Nice!

Your regular reminder that there’s nothing, nada, zero - that we can do about the US - but there’s a LOT we can do to make sure it doesn’t happen to us. Start here #auspol #IndependentsDay > linktr.ee/CommunityInd...

Broken. My @smh @theage cartoon.

It’s been almost 35 years since last playing Space Hulk. Setting it up again and teaching my best partner the game is taking us back to our early twenties. It’s good to have the time again now the kids are grown up and moved out. We’re testing all the games after moving house and downsizing.

A while back I asked folks why they’re joining Bluesky and the most common response I saw was, “I just want a good place to get my news” and, yall, no. Bad. GET YOUR NEWS FROM THE NEWS PBS Newshour is FREE FOR EVERYONE. youtu.be/PMOYN8JWdUk?...

Recently, we had a slight delay while this roo played with the flag on one of the greens. We filmed first about 100 metres away but were able to get as close as this because the roo was busy with the flag. Eventually, we were able to finish the hole when he hopped away.

Who am I? A question we might all ask ourselves. For me: I'm a retired medical physicist specialised in radiation oncology. I was born in South Africa of Irish/Scot/German descent, and am now an Australian citizen. I once worked in Germany as a guest scientist shortly after the wall came down.

This story is pretty inspiring, seeing someone give so much to others without being able to directly enjoy what she gives. The partial paralysis of her stomach is something I never imagined. I wish her all the best for her future.
