"BP, Exxon & Shell, who have recently noted their exit from renewables, are also withdrawing from core oil & gas production investments too. Over 50% of their operating cashflow is now going to shareholders, not explorers or construction crews."

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people. Sound efficient? HT @ellenmacarthurfdn.bsky.social

On this Europe Day, a nice little example of how the EU delivers concrete benefits through seemingly small steps and regulations - energy savings benefit Europeans (and other global citizens).

"Thin triple glazing products offer a solution [for retrofitters] – they come in a profile that fits existing frames designed for double glazing. You just swap out the glass, so long as your frames are in good enough condition and sufficiently insulating." www.thereengineer.pro/p/can-this-t...

It's tough to overstate just how shockingly unusual an article like this is. Despite the fact that this is the response of the vast, vast majority of neighbours for both wind and solar farms, they are mostly erased from existence in coverage of attitudes of neighbours to utility-scale renewables

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” Via @grist.org grist.org/biking/one-m...

"Albania, Bhutan, Nepal, Paraguay, Iceland, Ethiopia & the DR of Congo produced >99.7% of the electricity they consumed using geothermal, hydro, solar or wind power. 'We don’t need miracle technologies', said Stanford Uni prof Mark Jacobson, who published the data." Germany & Scotland also did well

Labour is handing this country on a silver platter to Reform. People do not vote Labour because they hate immigrants and want Reform-lite. They vote Labour because they want it to make a positive difference to their lives.

NEW Solar panels to be mandated on vast majority of new homes in England Currently about 40% of new builds have solar; new rules should push that to about 99% Story 👇 www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

The UK govt is proposing to offer subsidies (£1,000 to £2,000) for air to air heat pumps, as well as direct electric heating sources. Cc @annieleymarie.bsky.social @fascinatorfun.bsky.social www.gov.uk/government/n...

The tide is turning. As the country votes in local elections, more and more media outlets are talking about the end of the two-party system - and openly calling for electoral reform. First Past the Post is a ridiculous voting system but its days are numbered. We deserve better.

Today, millions of people will take part in local elections knowing that the results won't reflect what their community wants. We'll end up with mayors supported by a third of their constituents and councils where many voices aren't heard. FPTP is such an absurd system. It's time to replace it.

Corn ethanol is a bad idea. You could retire 97% of it back to nature, out the remaining 3% in solar, and come out even.

Last week I was playing around with a new "tree ring plot" to visualize daily global temperature anomalies from ERA5. I thought it would be neat to make a version of the plot for daily global absolute temperatures (rather than anomalies):

Next from the TBI: reducing smoking will never work and is a failed policy. We should instead invest in developing new therapies for cancer and establishing UK domestic tobacco farming to ensure security of supply. /snark #insanity #ukpolitics #climatechange www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...

Sigh. Someone explain to Blair that carbon capture doesn't work. All plants to date have captured far less than promised. Calling for CCS is just supporting fossil fuels and future climate chaos. #ukpolitics #climatechange #noplanetb www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This is a terrible decision. We need to eliminate the use of fire for heating, whether solid fuel, liquid or gas. With its health-harming pollutants and CO2 emissions it has no place in today's society. #UKpolitics #heating #pollution #homes www.theguardian.com/environment/...

🚨 New paper drop Must-read by a stellar group incl. @mliebreich.bsky.social, @iain-staffell.bsky.social H2 isn’t silver bullet it’s made out to be. It has a role—just not everywhere. Best bets: parts of industry, long-haul, storage Not useful: home heating, cars www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Dear BBC - is it the improved air quality? Comfort? Or that they lower bills & carbon emissions that make heat pumps 'controversial'? These are facts, not political statements. Banning a presenter from talking about this technology is dangerous & embarrassing. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/a...

What is happening to US clean energy manufacturing investments? Since Trump took office, 14 projects totaling $12.2 billion in investment and 14,115 jobs have slowed. My students @wellesley.edu and I are tracking it. Details 🧵 below. 🔌💡🔌🚗 www.the-big-green-machine.com/post-trump-s...

bizarre decision but it looks like it's already drawing more attention to this perfectly innocuous and valuable bit of public service podcasting 🤷‍♀️ as I'm not a BBC employee I can tell it like it is: heat pumps are great! UK needs policies & industry investment to extend the benefits to everyone

Oh FGS. Anything that upsets corporate power and/or the far right is now deemed by the BBC to invoke "public controversy", and must therefore be nixed. The BBC has done more to censor public debate than any other organisation in the UK. And still it goes on.

Sad news about the Happy Heat Pump Podcast. Sorry to say, that after about 20 episodes, we’re drawing it to a close at the request of the BBC which worries it may be seen as steering into areas of public controversy. 1/2 youtu.be/RJPKgngqoX0?...

In 2024, UK EPCs recommended fossil fuel boilers in 120,000+ homes. Heat pumps recommended? Zero. Zilch. Nada. We @regassistproj.bsky.social flagged this already in 2019. Gov't working on it, but old rules still rule. Why EPCs ignore heat pumps foresightmedia.com/historie/swp... HT James Twallin

Last year we ran a big survey of UK heat pump installers with @betatalk.bsky.social and @imsheat.bsky.social We couldn’t put all the data in our main report, so the team is writing follow ups. Here’s a deep dive on what installers say about skills and training www.nesta.org.uk/project-upda...

40% of global shipping moves fossil fuels ⛽🚢 Double trouble: 1. Profits from hauling coal, oil and fossil gas 🛢️🔥 2. Ships run on bunker fuel—the sludge of oil refining 🏭

The crisis for UK steel is exposing another – perhaps even bigger – crisis for the UK Our news media seems incapable of even the most basic factchecking YES energy for UK steelmakers is costly NO it's not due to net-zero YES it is due to GAS Here's what UK media isn't telling you🧵

Cars ruin cities in more ways than just running people over. Paris has reduced air pollution by 50-55% over the past 20 years through policies limiting traffic and banning polluting vehicles.

💡 New from RAP: “Why wait for the next energy crisis? Enjoy the benefits of flexibility today.” The U.S. can take a cue from the EU, where recent policies have driven a 250% increase in residential smart tariffs. Shawn Enterline, @vermontdcf.bsky.social and @jaapburger.eu explain: bit.ly/3EjHMqu

Really good read this from @acjsissons.bsky.social on how the government should respond to Trump’s tariffs. And it’s spot on about net zero and climate action. acjsissons.medium.com/what-now-for...

Tuesday 15th April at 16:00 CEST / 15:00 BST is heat pump policy o'clock. Our multi-institution heat pump policy toolkit will be presented, with wider policy discussion and a focus on resilience. Featuring Agora Energiewende, The IEA, RAP and others. www.agora-energiewende.org/news-events/...

Norway's first 'EV only' gas station opened today. Not only are all the diesel and petrol pumps gone, but the 'Shell' branding will also disappear from Norway. Similar conversions of forecourts into EV-only charging stations can be found in London 🇬🇧, Rotterdam 🇳🇱 and Paris 🇫🇷.

Does anyone know what just happened here? Very sudden drop in US 10Y treasury yields. Did the Fed intervene? #fed #bonds

Another good piece on heat pumps by @theipaper.com Pleased that my comments on behalf of the Heating Trades Network were included. Whilst the £7,500 grant has increased heat pump take up, it does not go far enough for most people. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...
