It’s scary, too, because of the massive harm it likely means will be inflicted on vulnerable people by people on the right who believe the harm is fully justified. It seems like we can’t persuade our way out of it, that it’s doomed to be a fight.

The article is scary to me because it argues that we’re back to a more historically common version of the U.S. compared to the last 50-ish years where we were actually going through a realignment. I’d love to hear from old-timers whether this rings true.

Granted I’m a lot older than you, but I grew up lower-middle class in the U.S. and was in a similar situation from about age 8 on. And, I didn’t mind one bit! Ended up *very* independent, a trait for which I’m grateful.
