Challenging Fascism With Fashion

Very quick read!

At @baseballprospectus.com today: The Braves are a publicly-traded company. They've reported fourth-quarter earnings. How did they do, and what does it say about the sport in general?

This is fun: Thousands of fans filled out a survey expressing their expectations for the upcoming baseball season. I took those answers and am ranking all 30 teams based on the fans' optimism. Today, we're ranking teams 30 to 21! Read for free!

On Pete Rose and the moment, and why this time isn’t actually any different. www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...

I continue my week of writing about teams that swore off free agency with the Brewers, who made their big offseason signing -- Jose Quintana for 1/4 -- yesterday. www.joesheehan.com

34Blon.

I continue to find @sheehannewsletter.bsky.social just the very best guide to every season. Interesting, fun, informative, you name it. If you're a person who thinks about baseball, you'll find a subscription absolutely worthwhile.

So Camden Yards moved the LF wall *again.* What's the effect going to be this time, with the new wall shorter than Walltimore yet still deeper than the original? Let's find out. It might not be as advantageous to Ryan Mountcastle as you'd like it to be. --> www.mlb.com/orioles/news...

No, MLB absolutely should not reinstate Pete Rose. Ever.

At at @baseballprospectus.com today, the recent passing of Guardians owner Larry Dolan raises the question: How good an investment are baseball teams?

That Rose bit was an addendum to Monday's Newsletter, which covered the two do-nothing twins, the Cardinals and Mariners. March is a great time to subscribe, so I'm hope you'll join nearly 3,000 readers in doing so, and get great coverage of baseball both on and off the field. www.joesheehan.com

Do not do this, Rob Manfred. I know you love cheap positive publicity. It's like poppers to you. You love to win the press conference, love to grab the low-hanging fruit and bite into it, let the juices run down your chin. For once, consider the bigger picture. Do not reinstate Pete Rose.

Also, from 2015, on Rose and Rule 21 (d). It's posted free. www.joesheehan.com/2021/01/joe-...

On Pete Rose, who broke the One Rule and should never, ever be reinstated. www.joesheehan.com

In sports, there would be few things more grotesque & craven than MLB reinstating a man who bet on games as an active player and manager. But from an industry leadership team that betrayed & lied about Oakland & Montreal, also entirely consistent.

Not a lifetime ban. Permanent ineligibility. Permanent. He's dead. It's still in effect. Permanent. You're a fucking sports publication and associated with the NYT. Get the basic facts right.

Issue 461 of my free weekly newsletter just came out. It’s free and weekly and features an original essay as well as links to everything I wrote this week. You should subscribe, you might like it. open.substack.com/pub/williamf...

RotoWire had another great year for the FSWA awards.

We're just 2.7% of the way through this term.

For any data science and analytics folks out there: My team is hiring! We are looking for someone with data chops, business acumen, and a passion for collaboration to fill this new position. If that sounds like you (or someone you know), come work with me and help our users find love!

Did you know: ⚾A losing team has gone immediately to playoffs every year since 2005 ⚾4 losing teams have done it in each of last two seasons Of last year's dozen teams under .500, there's 8 real possibilities. Who's going to October? We guarantee one of these will: --> www.mlb.com/news/mlb-los...

Heading into the weekend with some breakout picks. Hope you'll read and subscribe. (I still can't include pics in my posts. Weird.) http:/www.joesheehan.com

“Most things aren’t as unfair as Major League Baseball.” I mean…what? Go outside.

Still one of my most popular ones from the other place.

This was fun. Subscribe, you’ll get this stuff and a whole lot more. Plus, I won’t demand Joe Posnanski share his revenue. Http://www.joesheehan.com

You also make two assumptions here — “inject capital” and “operate at a loss indefinitely” — for which there is no evidence. None.

Reflected in the purchase price. It cost less to buy the Brewers than to buy the Cubs. Why do you care, though? Why is there all of this concern for the wallets of people rich enough to buy baseball teams? I just don’t get that part at all. If you can afford the team, you can afford the players.

I can no longer help you.

Oh, noes, the owner might have to invest his own money in his product. The horrors. How will he both do that AND eat?

Baseball fans: what are you looking forward to the most this upcoming season? For me a tie between Scherzer starts in person and seeing how Soto does with the Mets.

Most profitable teams in 2023, per Forbes: Orioles, Mariners, Pirates, Rays, Cubs. 2022: Mariners, Giants, Red Sox, Orioles, Athletics. I am begging you to stop regurgitating warmed-over talking points from 2002.

Professional sports leagues don't have the expansive socialism they have out of some desire for fairness or equity or competitive balance. They have socialism because it's a system that guarantees profits for capital, and they have gone to war with labor to keep it that way.

In re: my reply to the excellent @matrueblood.bsky.social, I don't know how you can look at the last 25 years of baseball and think, "Yes, even more local revenue sharing is the answer."

Today's Newsletter is up free for everyone. Read, love, and be the next to sign up as we push towards 3,000 subscribers. www.joesheehan.com This is where I'd run an excerpt, but I don't seem to be able to add images to Bluesky today. Just assume the clip was insightful and funny, thanks.
